The Yukon RCMP and Coroner’s Service are investigating a fatal boating mishap in the Tagish area.

The accident took place at midnight Saturday, going into Sunday.

Martin Claude Pelletier, 50, and Candace Shantel Gordon, 26, were found dead, chief coroner Heather Jones said Monday afternoon.

Police said a third person was injured. The name of that 28-year-old man was not released.

According to two media releases, the injured man called the Carcross RCMP for assistance. He was still in the boat.

The RCMP responded with patrols on water and in the air. The coroner’s service, Yukon Search and Rescue and member of the Whitehorse RCMP detachment helped with the search.

The boat was discovered around the Tagish River Bridge.

Pelletier had been living in Tagish at the time of the accident, and Gordon was from Whitehorse.

The injured man was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital by helicopter.

Police investigated the scene. It was determined that the boat had collided with the bridge and suffered major damage. The RCMP seized the boat for further investigation.

The cause of the collision has not been determined.

That said, police believe visibility, conditions and impairment all played a role in the fatal collision.

Jones said the boat belonged to Pelletier and that he was operating it at the time of the collision.

A Department of Highways and Public Works spokesperson said late this morning engineers have examined the bridge and found no damage. It continues to meet all structural safety standards.

If anything this photo should be move visible as a graphic warning for boating safety. Police allege that this is a result of speed and impairment. Both of those are avoidable and in this case would have saved 2 lives.

In respect for the families, this shouldn’t have been on Facebook. It is tragic enough for the families.
