The return of the Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival to Haines Junction in 2015 is good news for the village, says its acting mayor.

"It's great to have it come back,” Bruce Tomlin said in an interview this morning.

Late last week, it was announced the festival will return to its original home in Haines Junction next year.

The festival had been held at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse since 2011 after having moved from Haines Junction.

It took a hiatus this year to work on a long-term sustainability plan and consider different locations, as the audience wasn't growing in Whitehorse as officials thought it would.

Tomlin said the issue around the numerous campers scattered around the village during the festival that created conflict with some residents has been dealt with.

Originally, the village council passed a bylaw prohibiting any camping in the community (outside of designated campgrounds).

Tomlin, however, said that has since been changed so that RV parking will be permitted, though it will only be in the vicinity of the convention centre during the festival weekend.

As Tomlin said, the festival helps bring people to the community, filling hotel rooms and making purchases at other businesses as well.

"It's going to be great,” he said, noting his hope there will be more events in the community to draw visitors in.

It appears much of the community is in agreement.

As festival vice-president John Faulkner recalled: "During the recent Tourism Summit in Haines Junction, I mentioned that the festival will be returning to the Junction and the whole room cheered.”

That reaction affirms the organization is moving in the right direction, officials said, noting there is a strong desire to keep bluegrass music "alive and growing” in the Yukon.

Next year's festival will be held June 12-14, and it's expected the festival line up will be announced and weekend passes put on sale in December.

As work on planning for next year's festival continues, there is a focus on "presenting high-quality music by high-calibre acts, fantastic hospitality and all in the ‘must-see' destination of Haines Junction and the Kluane Mountains.”

Along with getting set for the 2015 festival, organizers have developed their short, mid and long-term business plan to help ensure the festival's stability in the years ahead.

The group noted new members are welcome to join the society, with membership fees set at $10 for the year.

Along with AGM voting privileges, members also have advance access to event tickets, special access to premium festival passes and opportunities to bring bluegrass events to the territory.
