SHOWING SUPPORT – Supporters of the NDP’s school safety bill gathered outside the Yukon Government Main Administration Building on March 23. The bill, which passed Wednesday, requires all Yukon schools to provide inclusive spaces or activities, such as Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs), for LGBTQ2S+ students and their allies.

Bill provides for safer schools, NDP says

After some protracted debates in the legislature, the NDP was successful in having a private member’s bill passed on Wednesday.

By Tim Giilck on April 21, 2022

After some protracted debates in the legislature, the NDP was successful in having a private member’s bill passed on Wednesday.

“I am so proud of what we accomplished today,” said Emily Tredger, the MLA for Whitehorse Centre, who introduced the bill.

“This bill will make schools safer for students.”

The bill requires all Yukon schools to provide inclusive spaces or activities, such as Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs), for LGBTQ2S+ students and their allies.

In a news release, the NDP stated “a crowd of students, as well as teachers and a principal, carrying pride flags and wide smiles, arrived early at the legislative assembly to witness this historic moment.”

They watched the bill receive final assent.

“Bill-304 is another incredibly necessary step in the incredibly difficult journey of reaching true equality and inclusivity in Yukon schools,” said Gabe, a Yukon student.

“GSAs will make some students feel safer and provide a space where they can be themselves,” said Nari, another student.

“The work we did on this bill was started because of so many students who came to us and shared their experiences,” said Tredger.

“Since the bill was introduced, we’ve heard from even more students, parents and educators who shared how excited they were.”

The NDP said, “The LGBTQ2S+ community has faced many challenges over the years and continues to face such challenges. This bill will make school safer for LGBTQ2S+ students, regardless of which schools they attend and if administration is supportive.”

The Liberal caucus was also happy to announce it had voted in favour of the bill.

In a news release following the vote, the caucus said “the Yukon Liberals are committed to ensuring schools are safe, supportive and inclusive learning environments for all Yukon students.

“In (July) 2021, the Yukon Liberal government released the territory’s first-ever LGBTQ2S+ Action Plan that outlines a variety of initiatives aimed at making government programs and services more inclusive and accessible to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and Two-Spirit+ (LGBTQ2S+) communities.”

The action plan contains more than 100 steps, including several focused on education and youth, such as:

• Implement Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) policies and encourage schools to support Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) or similar clubs; and

• Encourage extra-curricular programming that is more inclusive of queer relationships and diverse gender identities.

“Our territory does not need division,” said Education Minister Jeanie McLean, who is also the minister of Women and Gender Equity.

“We know that we are strongest when we work together. Given the deficiencies in the approach to the engagement and the consultation when this bill was introduced by the NDP member for Whitehorse Centre, I feel confident that our government can make up the difference through implementation.

“The strong relationships that we have built over the last few years will enable us to work collaboratively with Yukoners to ensure that this policy is implemented fairly, respectfully, and inclusively,” the minister added.

“I support this bill and look forward to continuing the work of our government that we are doing to ensure that our schools are safe, caring, and inclusive.”

The Yukon Party had been less enthusiastic about the bill, arguing it needed more consultation with the public.

However, on Wednesday, party leader Currie Dixon said, “Ultimately, my view is that this bill is ensuring that there are safe spaces in our schools for LGBTQ2S+ students.

“Whatever flaws there were in the process, that seems to be the driving intent of this bill, and I support that intention. So, I will support this bill and will vote in favour of it at third reading,” Dixon said.

“I do hope that the government takes the requirement for consultation seriously and seeks input from the school community about how to implement this change.”

Whatever happened to the idea of 'live and let live?' That concept goes both ways and as far as I am concerned this group are welcome to live as they please. What I do not welcome is the perceived special status that is exclusionary.

Reading the news lately seems to be a new chapter in 1984 where Big Brother government dictates how we should think and feel about how we conduct our lives, Our opinions don't count anymore and democracy is being crippled by back-room deals between the leftist paries so they can avoid scrutiny and march on with their agenda to reshape the world to their vision - while we pay for it.

Hey @Matthew (which is me) odd, anyways, was already planning on going. This is just easy to emabarass them on. We have 1 city in Yukon. Which 80% of schools are. If city council tells them to "eff off" and keep liberal politics out of public school systems then yes, it's squashed..

In response to - Just Tired on Apr 21, 2022 at 5:50 pm:

I am sorry that this is happening to your daughter. You can contact Victim Services and request a No-contact order. It’s not likely that they will assist you but they may have strategies for you as a victim of sexual harassment to help you cope - There should be counselling available to help you work through this.

You can also look to filing a Human Rights complaint for sexual harassment against the government. It is their absolute legal obligation to provide your child with a harassment free school environment - There are no, ifs ands or buts about it. Respond back if you want and I can find a way to help you with the language if necessary.

But I am concerned that Family & Children’s Services are not involved as it is a Child Protection issue. They are likely to say that you are the protective factor and it’s your obligation to protect your child… Never mind that the DOE and H&SS departments are organizational sisters.

The Human Rights process is free and they can help you through the claims process. You do not need a lawyer. Maybe there are other parents who have similar concerns. It’s most likely that there are. I would put money on it. You can organize! We used to detest the sexual corruption of our children and now it is normal?

But hey, that’s the Leftist reality we live in today. Thanks NDP Libbies!!!
We have to start answering back to this insanity… NO child should be subject to harassment for any reason - WTF!?

Most people are generally tolerant of what others pretend. Problems occur when they try to force us into agreeing that their fantasies are real. That's the crux of the matter whether it's gender identity, plandemic vaccines, global warming, politics, religion or whatever...

This is being promoted as a move to increase SAFETY . That is not true.
Is there a safety issue based on reality, because, if there is, it is unlikely a "safe space" would resolve it. It is more likely this will drive the situation further into the dark.
If it is actually based on perception, it would seem wise to clarify that. Solutions based solely on perceptions have a habit of creating unintended consequences. Solutions and actions based on perceptions also either camouflage, or perpetuate problems.
I know, I know, it's a trend, everyone needs to be 'woke' and be seen to be 'woke' but what if I have genuine concern for young people with untraditional sexual orientations?
Don't I owe them decisions that are based on reality and solutions that will actually work?

@ Mitch is uniformed - please explain to us the difference between gender and orientation, we are confused as in our two standardized genders which are based on the scientific study of biology, orientation is commonly derived from said gender. So please, by all means, educate the unwashed masses that are me on what changed.

So preferential accomodation is now in place for these students so they can feel "safe" in their schools. What happens when they finish their schooling and have to live, work and play in the big, bad, nasty world?

Nature will attest that the best way to not make yourself a target is to not hop about branch to branch screaming about how different or special you are. This is not to say that there aren't issues or concerns that need to be addressed but the chronic "i'm so special, i'm so different, but i wanna be included as long as it's understood how different or special i am" can't help but draw at least low level ire.

"safe spaces" sound like elitist pandering and clearly seems to indicate that those of a hetero normative persuasion need not apply, because you're just not special enough.

I may be behind the times but it seems to me that these days and as time goes on nobody particularly cares what your orientation is as long as you're not screaming in my face about it all the time. Do what you want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone / anything. But if you're going to aggressively draw attention to how special you are don't be surprised that folks would just as soon not be subjected to it and choose to ignore the whole mess.

Not surprised by the outrage expressed here; bottom line you and I are not harmed physically or financially by this decision. This is about the students in question not us and I would go as far as ask what do you care, these students are more adult then some on here.

Love when people use the "whats next" rhetoric. It's not debating in good faith and you could apply that slippery slope of yours to anything you want. Getting upset because marginalized youth may find a bit more support would be hilarious if it wasn't so off putting. As to why the "focus on sexuality", kids are allowed to figure themselves out, especially teens who may be lost and confused. It's not pushing more kids to be LGBTQ but providing resources to those who may feel lost and confused in a time when people are figuring out who they want to be. Damn you guys really don't like people who aren't exactly like you.

The poison pill of gender ideology is one step closer to being fully implemented in the Yukon.

These so-called "safe spaces" are little more than platforms for grooming children.
Parents have every right to be concerned about this legalized and very dangerous policy move.

Considering comments like this I think the NDP should set their sights on improving Civics education next.

How many gays does the alphabet club think are in our schools anyway? If I was the leader who formed the next government, I would cancel out this ridiculous waste of taxpayers money. If gays cannot play with straights, then that leaves a very false and negative message to members of the alphabet club.

Cool, as long as young men 'self-identifying' as female, don't enter the sacred space of young women: the bathroom. Create a 3rd neutral option, but protect women's spaces. Biological sex is reality. Women and girls need to be protected.

Under no circumstances, am I "anti-gay". I have several family members who are gay and have my full support in every aspect of their lives. I just feel support should be for ALL students, not just a selected few. Bullying is bullying, does not matter your life choice or grade or school you attend. It is there, in full view, everywhere.

Just Tired on Apr 21, 2022 at 5:20 pm

Now this p****s me off. KATE WHITE...wake up!! Truly, I mean this. I have a granddaughter who has been bullied, I mean sexually, for the last 2 years in her elementary school. No results have been to correct this issue. She is 8 years old & is currently in grade 3. So KATE....you want to take care of your "own kind". Teenagers can defend themselves, but my grandaughter in elementary school has NO PROTECTION. The principal in her school makes 101 excuses. Her mother feels useless in contacting Tracey-Anne McPhee, because she feels that she will not act on this issue (which is sexual harassment), due to her acting on the Hidden Valley Sexual Harassment Case. So how is someone in this situation going to move forward, when she has ZERO, I mean ZERO support. So carry on KATE WHITE....protect your own kind, but forget about those who are truly suffering and at their young age, unable to protect themselves. YES, I AM ONE DISAPPOINTED GRANDMA!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so sick of this, you looking after your own, but not the young ones who are really needing the help.

Wrong move, Dixon. The silent majority would rally behind you if you took up the charge against this propaganda campaign targeting children. Now there's going to be public backlash when parents start learning about this backdoor legislation and it will catch you off-guard.

Richard Smith on Apr 21, 2022 at 2:36 pm

Why are these students, many still in grade school, so focused on their sexuality. The main reason why they may need more protection is this "in your face" public approach (flags, parades, special legislation etc.)
It clearly portrays "look at us, we are better than you").
This legislation will only make any harassment worse. We owe it to these students not to let that happen. Their suicide rate is already about 3 times the normal.
If the government really wants public input on this legislation then put it to a referendum public vote.
The results will be quite clear.

Mitch Holder on Apr 21, 2022 at 2:24 pm

I think it needs to be understood that people who object to some of these proposals have some legitimate concerns. I do not disagree with the intent of these initiatives, safety and inclusivity are important civil concepts. I am going to explain my contention with this movement:

I am heterosexual. I am not addressed as such by the trans community even though I endeavor to do my best to address them properly, a learning curve for some that may surprise. I am not a CIS, you and your community do not get to re-identify me, simply because you wish to re-identify yourself. There is room for my widely held traditions of gender as well as room for your own means of identification. Feminism is facing conflict in the development of new genders and masculine issues have been all but emasculated. So my question is, was the intent of the LBGTQ2 community (my apologies if I missed any part of this growing acronym) to destabilize all other genders? How will hetero-normative students avail themselves of relevant sex education? Will there now need to be segregated sexual education? Notice how I am asking legitimate questions in the spirit of finding answers, not the spirit of condemnation. That very palpable confusion and genuine curiousity is what I think needs to be understood and included in the entire process of resolution.

Quoting from above article: "Our territory does not need division,” said Education Minister Jeanie McLean"

Then why did you divide Yukoners with vax mandates, and vax passes that essentially segregated Yukoners who did their research and refused the experimental covax, which it turns out is neither effective, nor is it safe.
And now YG is refusing to show us the data on the covax. Let's have a public forum on this.
