AN EVERLASTING GIFT – Trevor Goodall, left, presents Hoby Irwin of the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter with a $20,000 cheque, with Gaia attending. Goodallʼs late wife, Laura Miller-Goodall, left the money to the shelter in her will. The funds will help with new dog runs and fortify the Bella Fund, which provides money for emergency veterinary attention.

The Humane Society Yukon lost one of its most dedicated volunteers with the passing of Laura Miller-Goodall earlier this year.

Her memory, however, will live on at the society's Mae Bachur Animal Shelter.

Miller-Goodall's husband, Trevor Goodall, recently presented a cheque for $20,000 to the shelter from her estate, with the donation having been outlined in her will.

Society president Hoby Irwin said Thursday he was "extremely surprised” that she had listed the shelter in her will. After he thought about it, he realized it was in keeping with Miller-Goodall's generosity to the shelter.

"There's just no replacing someone like that,” Irwin said.

Miller-Goodall's passing was a loss not only to the staff, volunteers and others who were involved with the humane society, but also the dogs, which have lost a beloved walker.

In addition to helping out with fund-raisers and other shelter events, Miller-Goodall spent nearly every lunch hour she had going to the shelter and taking a canine for a stroll.

"A dog loves to walk,” Irwin said, noting volunteer dog walkers are always welcome at the shelter. "They really look forward to it,”

Miller-Goodall's love of dogs was evident every day she was at the shelter.

While staff haven't decided exactly what projects the money will be directed to, Irwin said it will go to the dogs. He cited the possibility of putting some of it toward improving the dog run area, among other initiatives. (See related story)

As Irwin pointed out, Miller-Goodall had a soft spot for the shelter's canines which was eagerly reciprocated.
