Bears are still active, Environment Yukon is telling Yukoners in an advisory issued this morning.
Senior conservation officer Ryan Hennings said a grizzly bear broke into a food cache last Thursday evening at a residence on the Horse Creek Road near Lake Laberge.
A black bear was seen Saturday in the MacPherson subdivision.
Two grizzlies were seen foraging near Judas Creek more than a week ago, he said.
“Bears are still active and bears are still out,” Hennings said.
“Residents have to be vigilant about controlling their attractants.”
He said residents also have to remain bear-aware when they’re out taking a dog for walk, hiking or skiing, just as they would be through the summer months.
In the Horse Creek case, the grizzly pushed open the door and removed a piece of hide.
But, since there was no meat inside, the reward was minimal, and there haven’t been any more reports of grizzly sightings in the area, Hennings said.
“Hopefully, this bear was a walk-by encounter and he’s walked off and is out of the area.”
Two officers went out to the Horse Creek Road Friday and talked to area resident. but there were no other sightings reported, Hennings said.
The senior CO said reports of bear sightings in November are not unusual across the territory.
Typically, he said, the bears are older males in poor condition who are desperately trying to fatten up before they den for the winter.
