Yukon conservation officers have put out a call for information regarding a black bear that was shot and abandoned near Jakes Corner near the end of August.
Yukon conservation officers have put out a call for information regarding a black bear that was shot and abandoned near Jakes Corner near the end of August.
A press release issued today from Environment Yukon states officers responded to a public complaint from the incident on Aug. 25, but the bear had possibly been shot about a week earlier.
The bear carcass was found near a moose carcass, from which the meat had been taken.
“It looked like somebody was out there harvesting a moose,” said Kevin Johnstone, a senior conservation officer with Environment Yukon.
The officers concluded that the bear likely appeared while the hunter(s) were harvesting the moose.
“And the bear was subsequently shot,” Johnstone said.
Conservation officers are asking the public with any information concerning hunters or other people who may have been in the Jakes Corner area around Aug. 16-25 to call 667-5221.
Cash rewards may be available for information leading to a conclusion of this matter.

Why does it take 3 months to report this to the public? People are transient and move on, people are passing through the Yukon. If this was reported immediately to the public, a detail might be fresh in someones mind to report. 3 months after the fact, good luck.

Why didn't they ask for the public for information 3 days after the complaint instead of 3 months ? Was their investigation that top secret ?

So was the Moose harvested legally or illegally? When you report your kill, you must declare where you shot it (GMS, location etc). This info should be with the CO office if it was legally harvested. If it wasn't legally harvested, then there are a bunch of infractions of the Wildlife Act.
