With Friday’s arrival of additional resources from Ontario, there are now some 85 fighters on the Bear Creek fire burning eight kilometres north of Haines Junction.

A fire management team of 15 also arrived from Ontario, and took over control of the blaze on Saturday evening.

The fire hazard in the Kluane region remains at extreme, though the area was receiving rain today.

The Bear Creek fire did not grow in size over the weekend and is still estimated at 652 hectares.

Meanwhile, two fire crews from B.C. have arrived in Watson Lake to assist with structural protection on the Toobally Lakes wildfire burning approximately 140 kilometres east of Watson Lake.

Fire information officer Mike Fancie told the Star this morning the 12,935-hectare wildfire is well within the wilderness observation zone but there are structures that need to be protected.

There are currently eight fires burning in the Yukon, most of which are being monitored.

A ban on open fires, including campfires and fireworks, was put in place last week.

It remains in place in the Whitehorse, Teslin, Haines Junction, Ross River and Watson Lake regions. Fires are still permitted in campground fire pits.

With the exception of the Haines Junction region, the fire hazard across the Yukon has fallen to low or moderate.

The hazard in the Whitehorse region was low this morning, and showers were continuing this afternoon.
