Yukon MP Larry Bagnell has been named parliamentary secretary to Melanie Joly, the minister of Economic Development and Official Languages (Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency).

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement Thursday.

“It is a great honour to be appointed by the prime minister to represent economic development across the territories,” Bagnell said.

“Over the last four years, I have developed a strong working relationship with Economic Development Minister Melanie Joly, and I look forward to helping her fulfill her mandate in building a stronger economy in the North.”

Bagnell won a fifth term in office in the Oct. 21 election. He was sworn in on Dec. 2.

He had previously served as parliamentary secretary to the minister of Natural Resources and the minister of Indian and Northern Affairs under Paul Martin, who was the prime minister from late 2003 to 2006.

Joly was an unsuccessful candidate for Montreal’s mayoralty before winning her first federal term in 2015.

Larry! Re economic development in the North?
If you put the Liberal Federal Government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in five years there'd be a shortage of sand....

Congrats Larry, remember, that is a job for our younger leaders. We seniors should be their guides. Like Jason Kenny guided Andrew Sheer. Crookedness begets crookedness. Keep up the good work. See you at the community office during your visits

Miles Epanhouser - "reduced" from what? Seems to me that, until this recent appointment, he's never been anything other than a backbencher But, I am pleased that he finally has been tapped for something.

That's awesome, congratulations, Larry. Parliamentary secretaries are real workhorses. I've admired quite a few of them for the understanding they have of the portfolio. I think the role has evolved since Paul Martin's days.

Hopefully this changes during the next Yukon election. The federal liberal party is destroying Canada with the "little potato". The Yukon gov't is no better

JT must have read my comment on Dec 10th. However, I stand by my claim.

Bob Folster: I agree, Rona Ambrose would be awesome. However, the damage the JT government, backed up by the PQ, will inflict on Canada will be too much and irreparable. Even Rona won't be able to do much. At my age, I don't see much positive future for this country. I'm already trying to learn to adjust to being a member of the visible minority.

Larry wanted a reduced workload due to family obligations.
I am very happy with his dedication and hard work.

Larry will do well with anything the Liberals task him with. These younger contenders which draw the age card are out of line.

Thank GOD that Larry got reelected !

Having "Rusty Pasloski" as the Yukon's sole MP while The Federal Conservatives go through their latest reenactment of "Julius Caesar" would be a disaster for the YT.

Your hard work a dedication has gotten you the role of a token minister's helper. Anyone not familiar with Larry's economic astuteness should read his economic revitalization plan he was paid an obscene amount of money for.
