Despite the "time-consuming” work of a city councillor, Dave Austin is ready for another term.
Now seeking his fourth consecutive stint in office, the president and CEO of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce says he enjoys and wants to continue working with both Whitehorse residents and city staff.
"I enjoy the interaction with people; listening to their concerns,” he says.
Of particular interest is making sure the history of the waterfront is preserved as work continues on its development.
Having a place for drivers to park downtown is also important to the councillor, who believes it's time for the city to get to work on constructing on a parkade.
A multi-level parkade has been discussed for a number of years, with the most recent study on it suggesting it's not feasible.
A member of the business community proposed building a parkade on the current city parking lot on Third Avenue at Steele Street in the 1990s, but the concept never got off the ground.
Austin would like to see the city start by building a one-level parkade that could be added to in the future as needed.
Asked whether that's realistic, given the most recent study, Austin replied: "I have to keep trying.”
More at the internal level in the city, Austin would also like to see council members be armed with more information on the day-to-day happenings of city departments.
Currently, council members who chair the committees for each department at council meetings, simply read the reports that come forward.
He would rather go into the meeting with a better sense of what's been happening in that department.
The veteran councillor doesn't have a strong desire to run for mayor, saying he has no problem with how Mayor Bev Buckway is performing in the role.
If he did have any issues with her job, he says, he would have looked at running for mayor.
Austin placed third in the 2006 vote for councillors, with 2,486 votes for him.
He was behind Doug Graham and Jan Stick, who is not running in this election after having lost her husband, Ed, earlier this year following a prolonged illness.
