A weekend four-wheeling trip turned ugly Saturday when a quad carrying three passengers rolled, sending two of the men to Whitehorse General Hospital.

The three men were riding a Polaris ATV near the intersection of Fish Lake Road and the Alaska Highway when the incident occurred, Whitehorse RCMP reported this morning.

The men were riding down a steep hill when the driver lost control and the ATV rolled several times, according to an RCMP press release.

The two passengers were taken to the hospital, where one man was treated and released.

The other suffered "serious facial injuries,” police said today.

The driver was examined at the scene by paramedics.

The RCMP are investigating the incident and believe alcohol was a factor, said Sgt. Don Rogers.

The driver may face impaired driving charges.

Get a clue, the self regulations are working just as well as any legislation would.

Everyone seems to be on the "ban ORV" bandwagon... yet I've yet to see anyone talk about how they'll enforce these regulations, and who will make up the rules.

95% of the ORV users are not the issue. They stick to the trails and respect the environment. The remaining 5% won't obey whatever regulations are put in place, and we'll be in the same position down the road.

Except that now we've wasted tons of money on making some rules. But now we can %^$#@ about how the ORV's are not following rules they didn't want, and had no say in.

I agree fully with ATV Rider,

Not all ATV riders should be classified by idiots who operate recreational motor vehicles while under the influence of anything. Many of us stick to the motorized trails, wear our helmets, slow down for persons on foot and pets and avoid all wildlife. We do not go off into the woods and destroy the vegitation and we do not rev up our engines in residential areas.

More rules and regulations will take the enjoyment from those of us who follow the rules and idiots like these ones will continue not to follow them. Maybe if people were required to have an actual license before they operate any motorized vehicle and had the common sense not to drive under the influence we wouldn't have these accidents.

Drunk: check

No Helmets: check

Reckless driving: check

Burden on health care: check

Ok, first off, it was a Ranger that can seat more than one person, secondly they were drinking, do not put all ATV users into this group. Not all of us tear up the ground or destroy the vegatation! Most of us have respect for nature, and we even pull over and slow down when people are walking on the trails that were made by ATV users and snowmobiles. So if you are going to regulate the ATVs then why not the snowmobiles? When they get stuck, they rip up the ground too! Once you take away the ATV use then the big 4x4s are going to show up. Please do not group all riders into one, as most the problems come from Parents who let their children take the quad out after school and on weekends, even if they are not old enough to ride them!

If common sense didn't stop them, more regulations certainly wouldn't have either.

"The two passengers were taken to the hospital..."

Excuse me, but aren't most ATVs designed for a single rider and those that aren't are for a single passenger beyond the rider.

I love it when some wingnut claims "Nanny State" and "Too many rules." It often seems more obvious that there aren't enough regulations.

Wow! Aren't ATV's fun! You can get drunk and drive anywhere you want in the Yukon, 3 to a quad. Just a little fun, drunk driving. Yeah, baby!

So, anyone charged with drunk driving? Hmmm? You know it is actually illegal to operate a quad while drunk. Then again, maybe not in the Yukon as long as you are tearing up fresh ground and are not on a road or trail.
