An all-terrain vehicle accident in Carmacks claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy Tuesday.
Carmacks resident Tyson William Dean Tulk was severely injured in a wooded area near Cole Mine Hill when his ATV flipped as he attempted to drive down steep terrain, Carmacks RCMP said today.
The ATV rolled over and pinned Tulk against a tree.
Police officers, Emergency Medical Services and local fire department volunteers immediately attended the scene, but Tulk eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Tulk was riding alone when the accident happened at approximately 3:45 p.m. He remained conscious after the accident and was able to cry out for help.
Local resident Ruth Blackjack heard the cries for help and notified emergency services personnel at 4 p.m.
According to acting chief coroner Julius Debuschewitz, emergency services arrived minutes after receiving the dispatch.
Debuschewitz was not at the scene of the accident, but said the removal of the ATV was most likely a difficult and dangerous process.
Tulk suffered massive head and neck trauma during the accident, as well as major abrasions and contusions to one of his legs. He was not wearing a helmet nor any protective gear.
He was taken by ambulance to the Carmacks Nursing Station where he was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m.
His family has been notified.
The RCMP detachment in Carmacks will continue to investigate the matter, as will the coroner's office. Debuschewitz said their investigation will start immediately, and he has yet to talk to the family.
At this point, he did not think he would send the boy's body out for an autopsy.
Debuschewitz could not comment on the number of ATV-related deaths in the territory each year.
Police remind those who drive recreational vehicles to take the necessary precautions to keep themselves safe, such as wearing a helmet and protective equipment at all times and driving on safe terrain.
