Whitehorse RCMP executed a search warrant Thursday morning in the Takhini Hot Springs Road area in relation to a July 10 shooting in the Long Lake Road area.

The wounded victim was taken to the nearby hospital for treatment. Police called it a targeted shooting.

On Thursday, members of the Whitehorse detachment, Whitehorse General Investigation Section, Yukon RCMP Crime Reduction Unit, Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services assisted in the investigation and response.

As a result of the search warrant, Taylor Duke was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • attempted murder with a firearm;

  • unauthorized possession of

  • a firearm;

  • disobeying a court order; and

  • carrying a firearm in a motor vehicle.

“Prior to (Thursday’s) arrest, Duke had been the subject of arrest warrants as a result of failing to attend court in December 2022 and March 2023,” police said.

Duke had previously been before the courts on these and other charges:

  • conspiracy to commit an indicatable offence;

  • participating in a criminal organization;

  • committing an offence for a criminal organization;

  • five counts of failing to comply with a release order;

  • possession of property obtained by crime;

  • possession for the purpose of trafficking;

  • two counts of intimidation.

“This was a complex investigation and took a co-ordinated strategic approach to ensure the safety of everyone involved,” police said.

“The Yukon RCMP would like to thank the public for their support as we worked to progress this investigation.”

More charges are expected to be laid in relation to the execution of the search warrant, police added.

It seems the Justice department is more interested in judicial relations than public relations if I may.

Previous offences should have had him in the penitentiary. Current offences should have him in the penitentiary. Whitehorse is becoming lawless. It's about time judges handed out appropriate sentences. Judges, are you listening?

What about the people who knowingly sheltered this known criminal for over a year?

What? He broke his word that he'd stay out of trouble when he was let out on his own recognisence for gangs and drugs and stolen goods and intimidation and consipiracy and fail to appear and fail to abide and possession and trafficking? This is truly shocking!

I'd say the courts should try again and let him loose on a promise to appear for attempted murder and shooting someone with a gun.

And I'm sure he'll be back out on bail before the ink dries.

The Mounties do their job, but the judges keep letting them go. I say, if crowed conditions at the WCC is the problem, then build more jails to house the criminal activists. No more bail. Harsher sentencing. Watch the crime go down.
