A Whitehorse man has been charged after a taxi driver was assaulted early Wednesday morning.
Whitehorse RCMP responded to the assault near the Yukon College residences at about 4:15 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found the victim unconscious and unresponsive, but Emergency Medical Services personnel were able to gain a response from him a short while later.
The 45-year-old victim, a driver for Premier Cabs, suffered head trauma among other injuries. He was transported to Whitehorse General Hospital.
Kevin Peter Frisch, 32, was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated assault.
He appeared in court Wednesday afternoon and remains in custody pending a show cause hearing on Friday.
Elaine Giam, the co-manager of Premier Cabs, said this morning she doesn't know exactly what happened, but does know her driver was at the college residences to attend to a dispatch when a man came up to the cab and said he wanted a ride.
She said the driver declined, and was subsequently assaulted.
"(Cab drivers are) faced with all kinds of customers,” Giam told the Star.
However, assaults leading to the hospitalization of a Premier driver are rare, she noted.
Giam said she planned to visit the driver in the hospital today.
She would not release his name.
RCMP continue to interview several witnesses as the investigation proceeds.

Here is the usual drill. Perp let out on bail, usual conditions, delays trial for months, gets minimum sentence - 3 for 1 for time served (on bail of course), released within a year. Same old, same old. In the meantime, the forgotten victim has to live with the trauma. Thats justice in Canada.
