The Yukon’s major distributor of electricity is facing some problems.

While the Star was unable to contact ATCO Electric Yukon about the situation before today’s deadline, it has posted on its social media sites that some consumers have been exposed to a scam.

“Our customers have recently been targets of a scam. Callers are claiming to be from ATCO Electric Yukon and asking customers to pay their overdue accounts,” the posts read.

“ATCO Electric Yukon employees will never contact you by phone and threaten immediate disconnection. If you get a suspicious call, hang up immediately. Do not provide your credit card or banking information to the caller,” the company advises.

“We encourage you to report suspicious calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If you would like to verify the status of your account with our team, we are here to help. Give us a call at 867-633-7000.”

This is on top of some accounting problems for ATCO.

Numerous customers have also taken to social media to complain about being over-charged by the company since the New Year.

“Anyone else charged unwarranted late payment fees on their ATCO bill?” one person wrote on social media this week.

“Maybe double check your bill. It has happened two months in a row, even after bringing it to the attention of ATCO. On top of the ridiculously high bill.”

Another person wrote, “I have had them on three of my bills and the for the four months I had a credit and didn’t owe anything.”

A third person stated, “Yes, last two bills and I’ve had credit. I guess they said something is wrong with their system and it’s charging everyone who has credit late payment fees.”
