When Typhoon Bopha hit the Philippines early this month, owners and staff at Asia Central in Whitehorse got to work looking at what they could do for victims.

They are now collecting goods – clothes and the like – to be shipped overseas for the victims as well as working on getting a trust account set up locally to go to relief efforts.

"This plan is in place now,” Mike Buensuceso, an Asia Central part-owner, said in an interview Monday afternoon.

He is unsure just what bank the account will be with because he's waiting to hear back from a couple of different banks.

The typhoon struck the southern Philippines on Dec. 4, with the most recent death toll at 1,020.

An estimated 844 people remain missing, and 1.2 million families have been displaced as a result of the storm.

Though he doesn't know anyone personally affected by the typhoon, Buensuceso said, he has a couple of friends who have been impacted because they know people in the region.

While the bank account has yet to be set up, Buensuceso said he's been pleased with the reaction of residents looking to donate.

He's already heard from interim Liberal leader Sandy Silver and Education Minister Scott Kent asking about where they can donate.

"It's uplifting,” Buensuceso said of the support.

Donated goods can be dropped off to the store (210 C Ogilvie St., next to Quiznos) and as soon as an account is set up, he will let Yukoners know where to donate.

Asia Central will pay for the shipping cost to send the goods overseas.
