Former Yukon MLA Haakon Arntzen is scheduled to make his first appearance in a Northwest Territories court to face a new charge of indecent assault dating back to 1973.
Last month, the Yukon's court of appeal ordered a new trial for Arntzen for last year's three convictions of indecent assault in the Yukon dating back to the 1970s.
Today, N.W.T. court staff said the most recent charge against Arntzen dates back to Jan. 1, 1973 in Fort Smith, but could not provide further details.
Arntzen's first appearance on the charge is scheduled for next Monday at the territorial court in Hay River.
Arntzen resigned from his Copperbelt seat in the Yukon legislature last September when he was handed a 15-month conditional sentence. Liberal Leader Arthur Mitchell won the seat in last November's byelection.
A stay was placed on Arntzen's sentence until the appeal was complete. At that point, the new trial was ordered.
Crown counsel in the Yukon are reviewing the court of appeal decision to decide how to proceed.
Arntzen was elected as a Yukon Party MLA in the 2002 election. He left the caucus to sit as an independent after the Yukon charges were laid in the spring of 2004.
