Area moves closer to having its new name

The Range Road North area is closer to becoming the neighbourhood of Range Point.

The Range Road North area is closer to becoming the neighbourhood of Range Point.

City council approved the first two readings of the bylaw for the neighbourhood naming at its meeting Monday night.

The naming comes out of a neighbourhood plan adopted earlier this year for the area, which includes the Takhini and Northland mobile home parks, Mountain View Estates, Stone Ridge and the Crow Street area.

Among the implementation items was the naming of the area.

So, in September three name options, including Range Point, Stonecrop and Range Road North (which it’s been commonly referred to for a number of years), were sent to residents for a vote.

Range Point came back clearly as the preferred option, with 39 votes compared to nine for Stonecrop and 29 for Range Road North.

With that, city staff brought forward the recommendation to officially name the area as Range Point.

“The selected name is a combination of ‘Range Road’ and ‘The Point’,” city staff noted in a summary report to council Monday.

“The Point was identified in the neighbourhood planning process as an important landmark in the neighbourhood, and the name suitably represents this landmark as well as the neighbourhood’s location on Range Road.”

Council appeared to agree Monday night with no discussion on the matter, but all hands raised in unison to pass first and second readings of the bylaw.

Third reading and adoption will come forward at council’s Nov. 24 meeting.

If that goes ahead, a neighbourhood sign identifying the Range Point area would be developed and installed near the intersection of Range Road and Mountainview Drive.

You couldn't make it up. Just when you thought City Councillors ( yes , we are looking at you Curteanu ) could not be more underemployed and 'occupied' with this sort of time-wasting , meaningless drivel , out comes proof to the contrary . This city is utterly doomed .

@Yukon 2. You sound angry. But it's humorous. A few comments and a few likes don't mean "most of the people". You have no idea what you're talking about, and you missed my original point.

@Loves Yukon. What you can take away from the comments here is that most of the people in Whitehorse are tired of watching the Sh%$ Show that is the COW now and before. And as far as being mayor well that will never happen. One has to cater to all the special interest groups and cry babies that Whitehorse has to offer. Clear the street pick up the garbage and stop giving in to all the interest groups and it would be a nice place to live again.

@ Yukoner2. That's your opinion, and it's really just a negative comment without any solution. Frankie's comments didn't relate to the article as it's written. Read it. They are not changing the name of the road. Maybe you should run...do you have solutions? Do you have constructive criticism. I somehow think not.

@Loves Yukon, maybe you too can run in the next election as you must also have a bong - the comments here are about does the city not have better things to do then to think of other ways to waste money and time? Call it road to s$%t village just don't waste time and money on it.

@Frankie. Its got nothing to do with Mailing Addresses. It's like the Porter Creek sign, or the Riverdale sign or the Granger sign etc. It's a name for the 'neighbourhood'. I attended the neighbourhood planning sessions and appreciated them. The road will get updated eventually...hopefully sooner than later. Until then I'll continue to drive around the potholes, even driving on the other side of the road when safe to do so.

agreed! Fix the road. Who cares about the name when you risk ruining your car by driving on the road! Every single year for six years they send city people to patch the road and it ends up with even bigger holes then before. Get your priorities straight Whitehorse.

If our overlords in the castle-O-shame reeeeeeaaaallly think this is a pressing issue and nothing else to tend too?
...then yes it is official ...there must be a bong on every desk the nobles occupy for a few hours a day whilst they peruse their email, read the news etc....

How much money is going into changing the mailing addresses and signs? Fixing the road going through to the bus turn around by Northland would be the better spend I would think.

What a waste of time. This city is a joke.
