Officials with Wildland Fire Management are currently assessing whether to reinstate a fire ban, spokesman George Maratos said today.
Officials with Wildland Fire Management are currently assessing whether to reinstate a fire ban, spokesman George Maratos said today.
"We are expecting it to be unseasonably warm Sunday, Monday and Tuesday,” Maratos said.
"And we are looking at extreme (fire hazard) throughout the south, which is pretty unusual for this time of the year.”
The Kluane National Park announced this morning it has reinstated its ban on all open fire, even in approved
campground pits, as the hazard in the Haines Junction district is already at extreme, as it is in the Ross River region.
Maratos said officials are also considering whether to reopen the fire information centre in Watson Lake. That's because the fire along the Stewart-Cassiar Highway on the B.C. side of the border could kick up this long weekend.
Junction 37 and Upper Liard remain on an evacuation alert, which is a precautionary measure to have residents prepare to leave if necessary.
There are currently 60 firefighters on the fire – 20 from the Yukon – four helicopters and three pieces of heavy equipment.
B.C. fire information officer Tim Neal said officials are continuing to open the highway daily between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to traffic guided by pilot cars, but that could change at any time.
Neal said the forecast for the weekend is for warmer weather, with a wind out of the northwest blowing southeast away from the Yukon-B.C. border.
