Just as the face of council has changed, it’s expected that so too will the committees’ council members, staff and the general public sit on.
Just as the face of council has changed, it’s expected that so too will the committees’ council members, staff and the general public sit on.
The new council that was sworn in last week had its first formal meeting Monday evening.
A recommendation came forward outlining the various committees council members would serve on as well as city staff and public appointments to each committee.
The change would see Coun. Jocelyn Curteanu move from representing council on the city’s committee for the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination (CCMARD) to representing council on the Persons with Disabilities Advisory Committee (PDAC).
As she said during last night’s meeting though, the change doesn’t mean she won’t be attending CCMARD meetings.
She retains an interest in the work of the group, which makes recommendations to council aimed at eliminating racism and discrimination.
Curteanu, now serving her second term on council, has represented council on the committee since its inception.
She added she’s looking forward to representing council on PDAC and working with that group, which brings forward recommendations around making the city more accessible for those with disabilities.
Council traditionally appoints or changes the appointments of committee members following an election.
While Curteanu is expected to move from CCMARD to PDAC, it’s also proposed that Coun. Rob Fendrick, who attended last night’s session by conference call, represent council on CCMARD.
He said he’s excited at the prospect of serving on CCMARD as well as the other appointments proposed.
Among them, it’s suggested Coun. Betty Irwin would represent council on the Association of Yukon Communities (AYC) as well as the Whitehorse Housing Advisory Board.
It’s proposed that new Coun. Roslyn Woodcock represent council on the Whitehorse Trail and Greenways Advisory Committee.
Coun. Dan Boyd (who was absent from last night’s meeting) would serve on the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce.
Mayor Dan Curtis pointed out that means he will likely no longer represent council at the chamber. However, he also stressed, as did Curteanu, that he anticipates continuing to be involved, though Boyd would serve as the council’s representative.
Curtis, meanwhile, would be council’s second representative on the AYC, with Coun. Samson Hartland serving as an alternate, if required.
The recommendation, brought forward by Jeff O’Farrell, the city’s manager of legislative services, also proposes staff appointments to the committees.
Linda Rapp, the director of community and recreation services, is expected to serve on CCMARD and the Whitehorse Planning Group on Homelessness, while city manager Christine Smith would be on PDAC.
Valerie Braga, the manager of financial services, would serve on the reciprocal insurance exchange.
Parks and community development manager Doug Hnatiuk, bylaw manager Dave Pruden and planner Darcy McCord would be on the Whitehorse Trails and Greenways Advisory Committee.
Sustainability manager Shannon Clohosey would be in the Yukon energy partners group as well as the Yukon Intergovernmental Committee on Environmental Sustainability.
Mike Gau, the director of development services, would join the Yukon Housing Action Plan Implementation Committee.
Finally, public appointments to the committees would see:
• Lillian Nakamura Maguire, Fumi Torigai and Rod Snow reappointed and Reem Girgrah appointed to CCMARD for a term that would expire Oct. 31, 2017;
• Lisa Rawlings Bird and Jenny Roberts reappointed with Alan Macklon, Christine Spenser, Colette Acheson and Hans Herdes appointed to PDAC for a term that would expire Oct. 31, 2016; and
• Mike Ivans, Mark Daniels and Ken Sylvestre reappointed and Craig Van Lankveld appointed to the Whitehorse Trail and Greenways Advisory Committee for a term that would expire Oct. 31, 2016.
Council will vote on all the appointments next week.

How does the resident of Whitehorse get on a committee? on Nov 3, 2015 at 4:22 pm
Normally there is a call for committee members before the public members are picked. Tell me Councillors is this an open and transparent City of Whitehorse?
