The ski hill outside Anchorage will honour Mount Sima season passes, it was announced late last week.
"We support Mt. Sima and its efforts to provide opportunities for skiers and snowboarders, and we wanted to show support for their operation and Eaglecrest's as well," Karen Loeffler, president of the Anchorage Ski Club, said in a press release distributed Friday afternoon.
"Our organization knows what it's like to face difficult times so we're glad to do anything we can to help. We totally agree with the folks at Eaglecrest that it is in the best interest of all ski areas to have as many successful ski areas as possible."
The board of directors for Mount Sima announced late last month it decided to keep the hill closed for he rest of the season, in the wake of equipment problems and safety concerns, along with a lack of snow.
The board has announced its intention to undergo a restructuring effort that will involve working with the city, the Yukon government and members of the public to develop a new strategic plan.
A public meeting will be held prior to the spring school break in March to advance those discussions, as well as explore how to handle some $70,000 in revenue collected through the sale of season passes and punch cards but was spent to cover snowmaking and other startup costs.
The Eaglecrest ski resort in Juneau announced earlier this month it will honour Mount Sima season passes, and Ski Smithers in Smithers, B.C. announced it will provide a 25 per cent discount for Sima members.
Anchorage's Alpenglow ski hill is located in Arctic Valley, about 25 kilometres from downtown Anchorage. It is open only on Saturdays and Sundays until April 12 and 13.
CJ Stiegele, Alpenglow's lodge manager, said this morning the hill has had some good snow this year, and some good weekends, with 250 and 300 skiers per day.
With an elevation of 915 metres (3,000 feet), the hill is equipped with two chairlifts and T-bar lift.
"We have had some really good snow up there, and some nice powder runs," she said. "We hope to see some of you folks."
