A light vehicle ice bridge across the Yukon River was officially opened in Dawson earlier this week.
DAWSON CITY – A light vehicle ice bridge across the Yukon River was officially opened in Dawson earlier this week.
It’s rated for traffic up to 5,000 kg and is posted with various signs to advise on the safest ways to use it.
Drivers are counselled to keep their speed down to 15 km/h and to space themselves 150 metres (500 feet) apart if they are travelling in the same direction. Another sign reminds people to expect bumps along the route.
Jim Regimbal, the northern area superintendent for the Department of Highways and Public Works, noted he has seen locals coming back and forth with plows on their vehicles, smoothing out the trail.
This week, major progress has been made on the heavier vehicle 40,000-kg route, which stretched from shore to shore as of Wednesday.
It’s not ready to use yet. Contractor Cobalt Construction is flooding and thickening the wider route.

I can't believe they spend so much money (TO COBALT) for a handful of people who choose to live "on the other side" ! When I lived there years ago.....they would stay over for freeze up and walk across when it was safe to do so !
