AN UNSUCCESSFUL QUEST – The vote margin by which André Bourcier lost his NDP nomination bid to Melissa Atkinson was not released by the party at Tuesday’s meeting.
Melissa Atkinson, a First Nations legal aid lawyer, won Yukon New Democrats’ vote Tuesday night to represent the party in the territory in October’s federal election.
Melissa Atkinson, a First Nations legal aid lawyer, won Yukon New Democrats’ vote Tuesday night to represent the party in the territory in October’s federal election.
Flanked by her mother, uncle and other linchpin figures of Atkinson’s political campaign, the new NDP candidate stood before the crowd of about 100, wiping a tear from her cheek.
“What I’ve come to notice is (this) ‘orange wave inertia’ because it just pulls you ... and grabs onto you for a good reason. And that good reason is to effect real parliamentary change in our Yukon,” Atkinson said.
“One of the things we look forward to is informing the Yukon that there is a real choice.”
Last night’s vote came after a month-long campaign between Atkinson and André Bourcier, a linguist at the Yukon Native Language Centre.
The meeting was held at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, where citizens heard speeches from both candidates before the ballots were collected and tallied.
Joined by the candidates was B.C. NDP MP Nathan Cullen, who spoke at length about the need for positive change in Ottawa.
Though vote numbers were not released, it appeared as though both candidates had a sizable following of supporters present.
Takhini-Kopper King MLA Kate White supported Bourcier.
She noted that Bourcier was at one of the first events she attended as an MLA, oozing a calm sort of confidence that struck White.
“I was awed by how easy he made it look,” White said.
It was an observation that still seemed relevant, as Bourcier addressed the crowd in both English and French.
He guided listeners through three NDP platforms – providing affordable childcare, protecting the environment and building a positive relationship with First Nations.
Besides hammering home the party’s ambitions, remarks about the stylings of Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s wavy locks were also popular at the meeting.
“It is true, that I also have nice hair,” Bourcier joked, turning his head slightly to show off his long mane gathered into a ponytail.
Cullen, on the other hand, noted he suffers from “follicle envy”— a self-deprecating jab at his own hair loss.
Atkinson and Bourcier are new to the political arena, having to learn the ropes together.
For Atkinson, getting into politics has had its challenges.
Growing up, she always wanted to be good at things instantly, listing baseball and ballet as examples.
What makes the learning curve easier is seeing the support and guidance she has behind her, whether it be her mother as a child, or her campaign team moving forward as a candidate.
She admitted she can be the independent type at times, partly because she was raised by a single mom.
Sometimes she held the mindset of “if you want things done, just do it yourself.”
But now, she’s learning to ask for help.
The months ahead signal the beginning of more sleep-deprived days for the lawyer, as the tireless campaigning prior to the Oct. 19 election is due to start soon after an office space has been secured.
There’s a bit of catch-up to be had, as both the Yukon’s Conservative and Liberal candidates – incumbent Ryan Leef and Larry Bagnell respectively – have been set since 2014.
Atkinson plans to devote campaign time to voter education, ensuring that more people understand that they have a vote and how to make it valid.
Her work experience will be an asset. She has spent years working with clients and familiarizing herself with Yukoners from all walks of life.
“To me, an MP should be the voice for the Yukon and not a Yukon voice in Ottawa,” she said.
Like many other NDP members, Atkinson believes the Conservative government has been offering fear and silence.
The passing of the controversial anti-terrorism act in May, known as Bill C-51, was a major push for her to get involved, she said this morning.
“That was one of the starting points of me saying, ‘There has to be some different way.’”
If Atkinson is elected, it would mark the first time a First Nation member became a Yukon MP.
While it would seem like a long-awaited step in the right direction, Atkinson has mixed emotions.
On one hand, she said, it shows people how slowly things are progressing.
It took Canada 97 years before finally granting First Nations people the right to vote—even longer to have a First Nations Yukon MP, whenever that occurs.
But, it’s not the only time in her career that she has been first— Atkinson was the territory’s first aboriginal Crown prosecutor.
She has adopted a mantra to view any opportunity that comes her way in life.
“People have to start somewhere.”
Atkinson had the support of former NDP leader Audrey McLaughlin, who was the territory’s MP from 1987 to 1997.
Faro resident Frank de Jong is the territory’s Green Party candidate.

Like most people, I am often weary of new Candidates as all too often it seems they get swept up by the celebrity of their federal counterparts in Ottawa and forget what they are there to do. Often confidence and experience is what I look for to prevent that from happening. That said Larry and Ryan have been known to not represent the Yukon's Voice in Ottawa, so it seems we will have to see how much confidence Atkinson has.
I have to say I am a little weary of the "It took Canada 97 years before finally granting First Nations people the right to vote—even longer to have a First Nations Yukon MP, whenever that occurs" comment. Listen Aimee no-one has been stopping the FN from getting into politics, in fact I think most people would agree that a FN women has the backing of several special interests groups that a white man wouldn't. Likely the biggest reason a FN hasn't been the MP yet is that they have their own governments.

You cannot speak about person on Jul 10, 2015 at 1:30 pm
You cannot speak about a person without knowing what they stand for!
The NDP Federal Party has no position on the economy, international affairs, regional development, housing strategy, and would centralize the Federal Government which would not be good for Canada and especial the Yukon.
Why our transfer payment have gone up in the Yukon is because of Harper providing the Federal funds to the regions to determine where best to invest it.
So let's see what this NDP candidate can say and do to move the Yukon forward.
She has already shown she set goals for herself, and accomplish her goals.
She has shown she is a hard worker by going to law school and determined to be successful.
Lets give her a chance to see what she can do!
Good luck and thanks for stepping up to run.
For me it is not about the party, but the person.
If a person is real or not, because we have seen that mess with the liberals and CoW employing a liberal member manager by liberal Mayor and Councillors.
What is that called?

Tom Mulcair and the NDP said they will bring back the gun registry unlike the libs and cons. Good luck selling your brand to the communities with that hanging over your head. Nevertheless thanks for putting your name forward, never an easy thing to do.

Seems like a humble, decent person who got involved for the right reasons. That's about all I can say right now. She needs to gain some confidence it seems. Looks like she tripped over her words a bit but I got the gist of what she was saying. ('a voice for the Yukon, not a voice in Ottawa'. I believe she meant, "a voice for the Yukon in Ottawa, not a voice for Ottawa, in the Yukon".)
All the best to you Melissa. Takes courage to stand up and run. You do not strike me as an ego maniac or someone looking to climb the ladder or line your nest. That's a good start.

I'm glad to see the NDP policy mentions a guaranteed income as we'll need it if they take over in Ottawa or in the Yukon.
Best to vote for a reasonable centrist Lib majority or minority rather than go from the far right ideology of the federal conservatives to the far left ideology of the federal NDP. That's the best way to put Canada back on track without too much collateral damage.
For the most part the Green Party are fiscal conservatives (not a bad thing) and social liberals (not a bad thing). Mostly centrists. And reasonable. They just need to stop trying to compete with the NDP for votes and go for the small 'c' and centrist votes. They would also do better if they toned down their 'Earth Muffin' wing.
To all the candidates - you're good people, keep it clean and truthful and thanks for putting your names forward. Just remember that whoever wins we want you to speak for all of us when you sit in Ottawa even if it means going against your party now and then.

Green Party is just another Name the Conservatives adopted, take a look at their members and do some research to see.

The Yukon First Nations will be making a huge mistake voting NDP when the Yukon becomes a park. There will be no money for anyone.

I haven't ever voted for the NDP, but that might change this coming election. All I can say is that the Yukon Libs missed the boat by not nominating Tamara Goeppel. Larry's best-by date has come and gone.

I was hoping Kate White would run.. she is a 'known' quantity in Whitehorse. I likely would have voted for Kate rather than party.. I'll keep an eye on Atkinson but at this moment in time, a relative new comer will not be enough to pull my vote away from Larry.
