A 46-year-old Alaskan woman died Sunday afternoon after the pickup truck she was driving left the Alaska Highway north of Haines Junction.

An RCMP press release issued this morning said the police were notified of the single-vehicle accident north of the Bear Creek Summit at 5:23 p.m. Sunday.

Police were also told a woman had been pinned in the overturned Ford F-250.

The truck was righted upon the RCMP's arrival and medical personnel pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

'Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel,' says the press release.

'Speed and alcohol are not believed to be a factor at this time.'

The identity of the woman, the lone occupant of the vehicle, is not being released pending notification of the next-of-kin.

The driver was southbound at the time of the accident.

The RCMP are cautioning the public to adjust their driving to weather conditions, with the winter approaching. They also suggest motorists carry a basic safety kit in case they become stranded.
