An early-morning crash on a stretch of the Alaska Highway within city limits has claimed the life of a popular radio show host.

Terrence Carlick, known by CHON-FM listeners as Terry, hosted the first nation radio station's evening rock and hip hop show.

The 21-year-old's 1997 F-150 pickup was found on the shoulder of the wrong side of the road at about 4:30 Sunday morning.

The crash occurred minutes before he was found, on a piece of highway between Crestview and the North Klondike Highway cutoff, near the Carlick family home.

The young man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to have contributed to the crash, but Carlick wasn't wearing a seatbelt at the time.

A taxi cab driver found Carlick soon after the crash. The cabbie had been by the area 15 minutes earlier and hadn't seen a rolled truck.

Marks left on the road showing the truck drifting slowly off the road are consistent with the driver falling asleep, Whitehorse RCMP said.

Preliminary investigation shows Carlick's northbound truck drifted off the right side of the road and then corrected, going back to the left.

The truck then headed back right and hit a cement retaining wall. After sliding along the wall, the truck went back onto the road and rolled, coming to a rest on the opposite side.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the crash scene Sunday to investigate.

Medical examination of Carlick's body will be done in the Yukon, as victims of single-vehicle crashes are rarely flown Outside for autopsies.

Alcohol isn't suspected as a contributing factor, the coroner said, as there were no indications of alcohol consumption at the crash scene.
