Air North is in expansion mode again.
Air North is in expansion mode again.
The Whitehorse-based airline announced today it’s adding Watson Lake and Prince George and Nanaimo, B.C. to its growing route network.
“Increased mining activity in the southern Yukon region – in particular Coeur Mining’s Silvertip Mine – has brought the opportunity to service new destinations,” Air North said in a statement.
The route addition stems from a private workforce charter that has been operated by Air North for the past several months.
Now available to the public, the route is serviced by a Boeing 737 aircraft and departs from the Vancouver Airport South Terminal with stops in Nanaimo, Kelowna, Prince George and Watson Lake before arriving in Whitehorse.
Upon arriving in Whitehorse, the Boeing 737 aircraft will operate the same route in reverse, transporting southbound passengers.
The first flight is scheduled to depart tomorrow, and will operate once weekly on Thursdays.
The addition of this route will not impact currently scheduled flights between Whitehorse, Vancouver, and Kelowna.
The purchase of alcohol is not allowed on this route.
While the mining industry is the driver behind the new route, Air North said, Yukoners will see the economic benefit of new jobs and more access to affordable air travel.
The airline has hired five employees in Watson Lake to deliver check-in and ramp services, equipment parking, cargo, and other related services.
Air North has an established partnership with First Kaska, the development corporation of the Liard First Nation in Watson Lake, to support its aviation operations and business development in the Kaska Nation.
“This will reduce travel costs for our charter customer, provide enhanced travel opportunities for Yukoners and visitors, and help us to keep our airfares affordable by absorbing some of our overhead expenses,” said Joe Sparling, the president and CEO of Air North.
“Just like our partnership with Victoria Gold with respect to our scheduled service to Mayo, this partnership with Coeur Silvertip provides a great illustration of the broad benefits that can accrue from increased activity in our mining sector and strategic partnerships between mining companies and local businesses as well as with First Nations.”
Alkan Air implemented service between Whitehorse and Watson Lake in 2016, but declining passenger loads led it to cancel the route in September 2018.
Founded in 1977, Air North has been serving Yukoners and visitors for more than 40 years, involving 15 destinations.
The privately-held company’s largest two shareholders are Sparling and the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.
Its fleet is comprised of five Boeing 737 jets and five turboprop aircraft, including three ATR-42s and two Hawker-Siddeley 748s.

CLIMATE EMERGENCY! how can any of you, the YG, the City of Whitehorse back this!? More flights, more stops? Planes burn the most fuel during takeoff. This means that more C02 will be helping climate change! Roddick and Stick will have to fight this tooth and nail. More than 1 flight out of the Yukon a year is too many!! A climate emergency was even read into the Yukon Legislative Assembly!! Surely no government employee will take any of these flights as it would surely increase the rate of the climate emergency!
--- Congrats Joe, all the best to Air North

Have flown with Air North on many occasions and they are without question the best airline around.
They remind me of Ward Air many years ago. Air Canada and Westjet are a joke in comparison.
Keep up the great work Joe.

We visited the Watson Lake Airport in 2018 and it was sad to see the lack of commercial flying, especially with its handsome old hanger. So good to see it back in service.

How do we ever adequately thank or recognize Joe Sparling for what he’s done for the territory and to improve air travel for every Yukoner?
I’ll add my voice to those asking for an east coast flight however, maybe send the Ottawa flight on over to Halifax once in a while?

What a treat! A dozen comments, all positive. Air North, and especially Joe Sparling, are a shining example of the best of the Yukon.

I agree with Norma Risby, even several Vegas style charter flights every year to Halifax would probably go over in a big way. If people on the east coast/or Whitehorse knew they’d have an opportunity to go either way for a 1 or 2 week visit in the spring and fall the flights would probably be full. Not sure if it would make economic sense for Air North to do it however.

Well done Mr. Sparling! You have been the catalyst for much of Yukon's economic health.
I recall when the Yukon government hired an alleged air travel "expert" who concluded that Air North would wither and fail up against the likes of Air Canada to who would dominate the northern air travel market.
Then Air North was named one of the best airlines worldwide by many in the travel industry: https://www.globeguide.ca/air-north-airline-review/
Carry on Mr. Sparling, Yukoners are proud of your good work and the many jobs you have created.

Who remembers the milk run, flying half hung, rivets on the wing vibrating like St. Vitas dance, oil leaks traveling along the wing on the DC6, and the unforgettable ker-plunk landing at the Watson Lake airport?

THANK YOU JOE!!!
I can now come home for visits from Prince George. It was too costly to fly to Vancouver or Calgary and then up to Whitehorse. This is my prayers answered!!
