Air Canada adds Calgary flight

Travellers flying directly to Calgary from Whitehorse will enjoy two choices next summer - Air Canada or Air North.

Travellers flying directly to Calgary from Whitehorse will enjoy two choices next summer - Air Canada or Air North.

Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah confirmed this morning that Air Canada will offer daily flights to Calgary from Whitehorse over the summer season, beginning June 1.

The flight is in addition to the three daily flights the airline offers to and from Vancouver through the summer.

"We were contemplating adding a fourth flight," Mah told the Star from Vancouver.

With the number of visitors coming to the Yukon from the east though, it made more sense to offer a flight from Calgary to Whitehorse, which could save a bit of time for those from the eastern part of the country.

"We're pretty confident the schedule will hold its own," Mah said when asked whether the new schedule could mean fewer travellers on the airline's Vancouver flights in and out of the territory.

While the new Calgary route will be useful for passengers heading to and from other parts of the country, the Vancouver route will continue to connect the Asian market with the Yukon, she pointed out.

The 70-seat flight will leave Calgary at 11:15 a.m., arriving in Whitehorse at 1 p.m.

It will then depart the territory at 1:35 p.m., arriving in Calgary at 5:15 p.m. It's timed to make connections with flights to Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

The schedule will run through the summer until around October, Mah said.

Meanwhile, Air North's website shows it will continue its Alberta runs, which also stop in Edmonton, three times a week until July 5, when it will offer a fourth flight on Sundays until Sept. 6.

It will then return to its Monday, Wednesday and Friday schedule.

Air North president Joe Sparling could not be reached for comment on Air Canada's move this morning.

More predatory practices from AC, picking plum season and lining up against Air North with the Calgary run. Regardless, AC simply can't provide the service and continuity (remember this past winter when Air North shuttled AC passengers because it was too cold) that Air North has built with and for Yukoners.

It isn't coincidental that AC made this announcement on the heels of WestJet considering northern routes.

I think everyone agrees that competition is great, but Air North has never been accused of being inflexible or over priced.

Hey AC, don't let to door hit you on the way out.

Wow, who cares. Air Canada should be giving up free flights anyways because our taxdollars keep them afloat.

A company is not 100% Canadian unless it gets some form of government subsidy.

Competition benefits us all. :)

Now we need to work on Northwestel and Yukon Electric.
