Three new forest fires were reported over the hot weekend, says today’s daily fire report issued by Yukon Wildland Fire Management.
All three were started by lightning.
Two were in the Dawson district and one in the Mayo district, but all three are in the wilderness zone.
The three new fires bring the total for this summer so far to 93, of which 76 were caused by lightning and 17 by people.
A total of 316,177 hectares have burned, of which 146,401 have burned in Old Crow’s wilderness zone.
The Dawson district has seen the second-highest amount of fire activity, with 98,558 hectares burned.
Despite the current hot spell, the fire danger rating this morning was low to moderate across most of the territory with the exception of the Haines Junction and Carcross districts, where the rating is high.
Meanwhile, a good chunk of the territory’s firefighting resources remain in B.C. where numerous wildfires have ravaged the province.
There are 50 Yukon firefighters in B.C., seven incident management staff and one airtanker group. Another 10 fire pumps were sent down last Thursday, bringing the total to 50.
Fire officials are reminding the public to be responsible when burning.
