Premier Sandy Silver has announced a leadership change for the Department of Finance and a term extension for the deputy minister of the Department of Justice.

Scott Thompson has announced his retirement as deputy minister for the Department of Finance, Silver said Jan. 5.

Jessica Schultz has been appointed as acting deputy minister of Finance for one year, effective Feb. 17.

Silver also announced a three-month term extension for Jeff Ford as acting deputy minister for the Department of Justice, effective Jan. 15.

Recruitment efforts will commence shortly for the position of deputy minister of the Department of Justice.

“Jessica Schultz is a highly experienced leader, public servant and finance professional,” Silver said.

“I am confident that her expertise and diligence will be welcome in the department and at the senior leadership table.

“I would like to sincerely thank Scott Thompson for his leadership in the Department of Finance and all of the support that he provided in recent years.

“I wish him all of the best in his retirement,” Silver added. “It is well deserved.

Schultz has served with the government for nearly three decades.

She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to Finance from her past work in various senior leadership roles across multiple departments.

“Schultz has considerable financial management expertise, and she has consistently provided leadership, mentoring and coaching to build financial capacity across the organization,” the government said in a statement.

She has held various senior management positions in the Departments of Community Services, the Executive Council Office, Economic Development and Tourism and Culture as well as Highways and Public Works.

Since 2019, she has served as the assistant deputy minister of the Management Board Secretariat within the Department Finance.

"gold is the money of kings,
silver is the money of princes,
barter is the money of peasants,
debt is the money of slaves."

The purpose of banks is to indebt you so you become their slaves. The rothschilds figured out long ago that it is more profitable to indebt whole countries than mere individuals. Pierre Trudeau, when he was Canada's PM began borrowing offshore money even though we have our own central bank and why i still don't know. Why? I don't know!

@ Patti; A mortgage is not considered a debt in the same way as frivolous spending is. Housing is a necessity for all and is not free, it is a necessary expense, either with a mortgage or by paying rent. A mortgage can be compared to paying rent. As a renter you are paying for cost of your housing, plus an amount as profit for the landlord. A mortgage can be considered as paying rent to yourself as the eventual owner of the property, with the bank taking the profit in same way as a landlord.

Patti Eyre said "everyone lives in debt,". Maybe you do. I don't. I've never paid a dime in credit card interest . I saved money for every car I've bought and once bought I started saving for the next one. I learned early to always set aside a fixed amount every payday into an emergency fund. Most of the people I know are the same. We all grew up in homes of modest means. We were told "we can't afford it ' and "not now" by our parents, and we weren't afraid to say the same thing to our children. Please think before making generalizations .

@ Patti: No, everyone doesn't live in debt. Some of us try to live within our means. If we don't have the money, we can't afford it and don't buy it. Buying today and paying tomorrow is a recipe for disaster because tomorrow never comes.

@Patti Eyre on Jan 10, 2023. I think you need to give your head a shake. I hope your young enough to help pay off JTs massive trillion dollar plus debt. And with a 350 billion dollar deficit, don't expect any government to balance the books anytime in your lifetime or your children's generation. I kind of makes me feel good knowing that you leftys are going to be left with all the damage your handsome, wavy haired god JT has left you. Yeah, a nice warm feeling in my heart. Wish I could be around to see your faces in 20 years from now.

@Patti, oh my, I can't believe you've said that... do you even know what fractional reserve banking is? Don't worry, IMF coming in real soon to wipe out our debt, I'll let you ponder what's after that... p.s nothing is free, remember "You will own nothing and be happy!" WEF

@Patti, your partially correct in your statement “grab a brain”. But you should be the one out shopping. The thought that everyone is in debt and so what if the government is, is the problem. I’m not sure the simplest way to put it so you understand. When you are in debt, you (yes you) must go out and earn money to pay it off. When the government owes money the only avenue for them is to take a bigger portion of what you earn. Trudeau and Freeland will be long gone before this gigantic debt comes due. It will be the government after them that will be stuck cleaning up the mess left behind. They will be the ones cutting all these warm and fuzzy programs that everyone in debt has come to love. And they will be the bad guys for it. The easiest thing to remember is all debt comes due. And with a government that is spending other peoples money it’s way to easy to not care about the budget. It’s more important to buy votes. Maybe while your out shopping for brains, grab 2. Just in case you lose one on the way home.

@matt: grab a brain dummy, everyone lives in debt, it’s not the end of the world but the banks love it, still, give your head a shake

Huh!? Is this real!? This man has praised Freeland for her "budget", we really are living in lala land. Exactly how will this debt be paid off!? *cricket, cricket* make no mistake, you're enslaving the future generation into debt that can never, and will never be paid off..
