Accused woman was smiling: stabbing victim

A man who says he was stabbed by the son of his ex-girlfriend recounted the details of a "rocky” relationship, in court Tuesday.
On Oct. 18, 2008, Allan Bullers, 38, was spending the night at his girlfriend Heather Allen's house when her son, Douglas Allen, came home, interrupting an argument between the couple.
Douglas confronted Bullers and the two got into a fight. In the midst of the struggle, Douglas stabbed Bullers in the back with a kitchen knife.
Bullers told Yukon Supreme Court that when he asked Douglas why he stabbed him, Douglas responded, "I hate you. You ruined my life and I want to kill you.”
Bullers testified that he was in an "on-again, off-again” relationship with 39-year-old Heather for five years.
He described the relationship as normal, but said, "it had its rocky moments and its good moments.”
The pair broke up and reunited approximately a dozen times throughout their years together, and Bullers was charged with assault in February 2007, he said.
Heather, who had been drinking, was about to drive away and pick up her son. When he tried to stop her from leaving, she began kicking and hitting him, Bullers said about the 2007 assault.
"I lashed back and I hit her,” he said.
More strain was put on their relationship a few years ago. The two got into a serious traffic collision when Bullers was driving a long-haul truck and Heather was his passenger.
Although Bullers' injuries were minimal, Heather was seriously hurt. She had to be hospitalized, sustained multiple fractures and was on pain medication.
She was still recovering from the accident at the time of the incident in October 2008.
Their relationship was also in a recovery mode at that time, said Bullers.
"It was tough,” he said. "We were working at it because of the accident. It was difficult.”
In the six months leading up to the incident, they talked every day on the phone and through text messaging, and they saw each other a few times every week.
But Bullers said he wasn't allowed to come over until after Heather's children went to bed, and the couple would only see each other at her convenience.
"I never went over there unless I was invited,” Bullers testified, adding he was invited over the night he was stabbed.
At that time, Bullers was living with his parents in Porter Creek. When he got home from work at about 8 or 9 p.m., he soon went to bed because he had to get up early for work the next day.
Just before midnight, he received a call from Heather asking him to drive to Riverdale, pick up her bank card and buy her some beer. She said he could stay over.
Bullers agreed, completed the task and returned to the Riverdale residence shortly after 12 a.m.
He put down the beer and the bank card and proceeded up the stairs to the bedroom. Heather said she would be up shortly, Bullers testified.
Later, Bullers was awakened by Heather when she knocked a cup of juice and a lamp off the night stand.
Soon after, Heather received a phone call from Douglas. Bullers said he could understand most of the conversation and heard Douglas ask if Bullers was in the house with her.
He heard Douglas say, "If he's up there, I'm coming up there,” but Heather told her son Bullers wasn't there, Bullers told the court.
After the call ended, Bullers said, he asked Heather, who was on the phone, about the conversation, but she denied she had just talked to her son.
Bullers then grabbed the cell phone from her to check the call history and Heather struck him on the side of the head. She got up and started yelling, and Bullers began to put on his clothes in preparation to leave.
Then, Heather opened the door and her son was standing there, court was told.
Bullers testified he heard Douglas say, "Where is he?” His mother then pointed to Bullers and said, "He's right there. Get him, Doug.”
Douglas kicked Bullers in the chest and Bullers asked him, "Do you really want to do this?”
Douglas came at him again, Bullers threw the-then 18-year-old on the bed and the two began to fight. Moments later, Bullers was stabbed.
"All of a sudden I felt this, I guess, pressure,” Bullers testified.
He stood up, looked over his left shoulder and saw a handle sticking out of his back.
Heather removed the knife at Bullers' request and Bullers proceeded downstairs.
Halfway down the stairs, he turned around to see both Allens standing at the top the stairs. Heather, with blood on her shirt and the knife in her hand, was smiling, Bullers said.
He then left the house and called the RCMP.
"I remember laying down in the middle of the street just figuring this was it,” he said.
Douglas is charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. His mother stands charged with assault and aiding and abetting an assault.
The trial, presided over by Justice Leigh Gower, continued today.
