A man charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Carcross hotelier is hoping to be released from jail next week.

Dean Ernest Boucher, 32, appeared in Yukon Supreme Court Tuesday to make an application to be released.

His lawyer, Gord Coffin, asked that the matter be adjourned until April 21 so he could have time to determine an appropriate residence for his client to stay at.

Boucher could return to his home community of Carcross if the Carcross-Tagish First Nation there decides it's OK for him to return.

If there are too many community concerns over his return, Boucher could instead reside at the Adult Resource Centre (ARC) in Whitehorse if a bed is available.

Boucher, a large first nation man dressed in a red Whitehorse Correctional Centre uniform, showed signs of being concerned about his family seated behind him.

The accused sat with his back turned away from the judge for the whole time Tuesday so he could make faces at his small child, who sat in the gallery.

Two members of the RCMP stood behind Boucher, keeping an eye on him. Normally there is only one RCMP guard who accompanies a prisoner into court.

Boucher was one of two men arrested in relation to the death of Bob Olson, the former owner of the Caribou Hotel in Carcross.

Olson's remains were found in the Wolf Creek subdivision in Whitehorse last December.

Boucher's co-accused, Whitehorse resident Mark Lewis Lange, 29, still remains in custody.
