One of the men accused of murdering Wilfred “Dickie” Charlie has allegedly breached his bail order, a court has been told.
Mario Reuben Skookum, 26, appeared Tuesday before Justice Suzanne Duncan in Yukon Supreme Court.
Crown prosecutor Ludovic Gouaillier told the court that Skookum has breached the conditions of his release. Skookum had been freed on bail by the late Justice Leigh Gower in July 2018.
Gouaillier did not indicate which bail term has been breached.
He recommended sending the matter for a bail review hearing soon.
Bibhas Vase, Skookum’s lawyer, was unable to attend court on Tuesday. He arranged for Samantha Dawson to appear by phone as his agent. She did not oppose anything said nor proposed by the Crown.
Duncan set the review to take place on Oct. 31. Skookum will remain in custody until that time.
Skookum stands charged alongside his brother, Tyler Skookum, 28, in the death of Charlie, 57, in Carmacks.
Charlie was reported missing on June 19, 2017. His body was found July 5 of that year in the Yukon River around Fort Selkirk.
The autopsy revealed the death was a homicide.
Mario Skookum’s bail conditions included reporting to a bail supervisor upon release, reside at the Yukon Adult Resource Centre if accepted, abide by a curfew, and abstain from drinking alcohol.
He was ordered not to attend any establishment that sells or serves alcohol, participate in all programs as instructed, remain in the Yukon, own no weapons, stay out of Carmacks unless he had the bail supervisor’s permission or for a court date, and have no contact with several witnesses.
The accused was also instructed to carry a copy of his recognizance with him at all times.

WOW... just read this Star article from 2008:
https://www.whitehorsestar.com/News/carmacks-man-sent-to-federal-penitentiary
from the article:
"Charlie's record includes 21 convictions between 1982 and 2002.
They include three for assault causing bodily harm, three major sexual assaults, three simple assaults, eight administration of justice and three drinking and driving convictions.
Charlie served time in a federal penitentiary for the sexual assault convictions in 1988, reads the document."
Wow, nice people, nice community. Lock them up, throw away the key.

Maybe the conditions were too severe and there could be a new judicial/social approach to cases like this to ensure offenders quickly get back into society.
The people charged could be put up in a local hotel and given meal allowances and a daily alcohol allowance but prohibited from using and street drugs other than pot which is now legal.

I don't care what the provocation was.. there is never an excuse for taking a life.. killing someone? Murder.. and walking away with bail..not a threat? I betcha Dickie didn't think the brothers were not a threat.

Response to - Annoyed by ignorance: I am annoyed by ignorance too. Mario has a history of violence and sexual violence. Yes - he is a danger to others. Tyler also has a history of violence - Yes, he is a danger to others.
No person can know another person. What is really going on when we say we know someone is that I like him or her. There is a bias associated with this, a cognitive delusion, that holds that if I like someone and they do something bad then I am also bad.
Unbelievable! How did we get so collectively unintelligent?

Listen here. I know the Skookums well they're not a threat to anyone else. Dickie was way more of a threat than these two and he walked free without conditions everyday. Get the full story before you open your mouth and sound like an idiot. The crying shame is two girls from Pelly that walked around for more than a year after killing someone allowing one of them to commit a second murder. The Charlie case isn't so bad when you look at the circumstances surrounding it.

How about innocent until proven guilty? Everyone here is assuming that they know what actually happened when they have no idea to what the circumstances are, nor what the evidence can prove beyond a reasonable doubt....

Why would someone being accused of murder be released on bail in the first place? Our justice system sucks!

Since when are you set free on bail when you've murdered? on Oct 3, 2019 at 2:11 am
Really, set free on bail after what he did? Lock him up and his brother too. Just like the punk who got a life sentence for executing the Adam Cormack, these two should be held accountable forever! Enough 'empathy' and understanding. I know one of them and neither of them had any reason to torture and kill this poor man. Go away forever. You destroyed your community by doing this and you need to pay.

This is an Industry. Not Justice. However very dangerous for the people that live there. First Nations should come forward and demand justice.

Why is he on bail, what is wrong with the justice system?

Bailees and convictees violate conditions regularly. The Court System is not capable of processing all of the violations and then there is the Gladue pushback.
It is well known that wife beaters and their victims have regular contact throughout the no-contact order.
Want to know where the sex offenders are? So does their PO. Give em a call if you know.
Murderers get bail? Must be a helluva Gladue singsong...
The courts know this, the lawyers know this, the POs know this, victim services knows this and the RCMP know it.
Why put anyone on conditions? It’s not like anyone expects anything from the practice.
