A B.C. man accused of murdering Adam Cormack has secured new legal counsel, after his previous lawyers withdrew from the case last month.

Edward James Penner, 21, appeared before Yukon Supreme Court Justice Edith Campbell on Tuesday. The date had been set to check in on Penner’s actions to secure new legal representation.

Lawyer Joni Ellerton told the court she and Jennifer Cunningham – who was not present Tuesday – will be Penner’s co-counsels.

Ellerton said the trial, scheduled from Aug. 22 to Sept. 29, should still work for the defence.

Crown prosecutor Susan Bogle agreed and stated she has forwarded all the necessary disclosure to the defence.

Ellerton suggested that this case be brought back soon to determine if the trial dates are still workable. Campbell agreed, and set Penner’s next appearance for March 26.

Penner’s previous legal team of Gordon Coffin and Amy Steele told the court Jan. 31 they were no longer able to represent him. No further details were provided.

Cormack, 25, was found dead west of Whitehorse, just north of the Old Alaska Highway on June 28, 2017.

Penner was arrested the following month.
