AUGMENTING HYDRO GENERATION – In this file photo from early February, the LNG plant is providing additional generation for the grid. This morning, Yukon Energy was supplying the grid entirely with hydro generation. The Yukon Party announced this morning that if it’s elected April 12, it would immediately freeze electricity rate increases imposed by Yukon Energy.

Yukon Party Leader Currie Dixon

A Yukon Party regime would freeze power rates

The Yukon Party would immediately freeze electrical rates imposed by Yukon Energy if elected April 12, party Leader Currie Dixon said Thursday.

By Chuck Tobin on March 25, 2021

The Yukon Party would immediately freeze electrical rates imposed by Yukon Energy if elected April 12, party Leader Currie Dixon said Thursday.

Dixon announced the campaign promise during a Zoom press conference.

The freeze would be in effect for two years, and would include the scheduled increase of 11.5 per cent later this year, he said.

Dixon said he knows first-hand how Yukoners have been hit hard by rising costs in recent years, including rising costs for groceries, fuel, housing, rent and electrical rates.

“All these increases have made life unaffordable for Yukon families,” the Yukon Party leader said.

“They have made it more and more challenging to support your families and pay your bills, and this has been made worse by the pandemic.”

Dixon noted this year’s proposed increase is on top of the 11.8 per cent increase in 2019.

“This is unsustainable for Yukoners, and we need to take action to support families and support the territory’s economic recovery.”

Dixon said they are tired of waiting for the Liberal government to address rising costs.

A Yukon Party government would address this; it’s going to take action for change, he said.

“We are going to make life more affordable,” Dixon said. “We have heard loud and clear energy is too expensive. So, the Yukon Party is going to freeze your power rates, period.”

Dixon acknowledged the freeze would only affect the Crown corporation’s rate boosts, as the government does not have any control over rate increases imposed by ATCO Electric Yukon.

Dixon explained that over the course of the two-year freeze, the Yukon Party would work with Yukon Energy to stabilize the corporation’s budget and ensure it’s adequately resourced.

The Yukon Party would provide the Crown corporation with direct funding to recover the revenue shortfall as a result of the rate freeze over the two years, he said.

Dixon said they would launch a review to the rate application process to make applications more predictable and manageable. They would also “depoliticize” the process, he said.

Dixon said they would increase transparency for energy costs so Yukoners would have a better understanding of rate increases.

“The Yukon Party will make life more affordable and predictable for Yukon families and businesses by eliminating the alarming rate swings, which have become common in recent years,” he said.

Dixon said the freeze would be key to leading the territory out of the pandemic and into a prosperous future.

“It would set the Yukon up on the path for our economic recovery,” he said.

Dixon said his party will make sure future rate hikes are brought forward at a reasonable and sustainable level for Yukon families.

The days of 11 and 12 per cent increases would be over, he said.

“A Yukon Party government knows that if we take action for a change, we will make life better for Yukoners.”

A short time later, in response to the Yukon Party announcement, Liberal party spokesperson Sunny Patch issued a statement calling the
suggested approach not sustainable or responsible.

“If we delay rate increases now, we are simply pushing the problem to a later day and compounding the eventual rate increase,” Patch said. “This means higher increases down the road.

“Promising to freeze rate increases now means Yukoners will pay more in the future. It is not a sustainable or responsible way to approach energy costs,” she added.

Patch said the current rate increases Yukoners are experiencing are due to the Yukon Party’s last rate freeze while in government.

@Chuck Farley hit the nail on the head. The whole issue of "riders" needs to be investigated thoroughly. The energy cost rate increase is not the whole problem.
For example, when all the riders and taxes were included, the 11.8% energy rate increase in 2011 resulted in an increase of 17.6% on the total $/kWh we paid on our power bills in 2020. This discrepancy is significant and needs to be explained fully to increase transparency for energy costs, so Yukoners will have a better understanding of rate increases.

The fact of the matter is the Yukon requires more reliable power generation, and pretending otherwise is ridiculous. Renting diesel generators year after year is only going to cause rates to rise exponentially. Don't worry though, the carbon tax will take care of that.
Expand the capacity of the existing hydro infrastructure, or build another dam. Stop being hamstrung by the wailing few - if they don't like it, they can turn off their power!

Travel Claims Freeze on Mar 28, 2021 at 10:44 pm

Here is an idea for the Yukon Party: Freeze Brad Cathers travel claims for gas and food which cost Yukon taxpayers about $25,000 last year. Imagine making that kind of money for simply driving into Whitehorse and back from outside city limits. Does anyone else living in Lake Laberge get their food and gas covered simply for commuting into Whitehorse?

Just imagine how much dough he quietly made over the last 20 years or so that he has been in office. If the people in Lake Laberge who keep voting for him, are ok with this, how about they get together and foot his bill? It only seems fair since the rest of us don't have the ability to vote him out of office!

Freezing power rates does nothing to address the riders; these extra costs add close to $80.00 per month. I have no problem with the energy charge.

There is no non-socialist political party anymore. Hasn’t been for a long time. The level of pandering in this election is already pathetic. This proposal to hide affordability issues CREATED by government policy is worthy of a high school election. They make the liberals look intelligent in their reasoned criticism of it, which is no easy task.
The territory has been riding the knife edge of a energy supply crisis for about 5 years now and there is no end in sight. The ever growing diesel backups are a symptom of a government and population that can’t intelligently manage itself and the bills are coming due. Residents want power but don’t want to face the true cost or organize around real, viable solutions.
Gov is short term thinking and incoherent. They are 90% responsible for the current situation. Gov policy has driven us towards the cliff by creating in-migration and pushing electric heat. As they continue to do, knowing full well were we are headed.
Soft people make hard times and those times are a’comin.

Why are we still paying for Faro? That has been a underhanded money grab for years. That lost revenue has been made up years ago. The present reality of charging so called energy hogs a higher rate only discriminates against large families or households who have to pay a much higher rate for their power use. Due to the large number of family and /or household members they use more hot water and wash and dry more clothes than smaller families. We should all pay the same rate regardless. A professional couple with no children get to pay the cheapest rates due to the natural smaller energy use, yet they generally will have a larger house hold income vs a large family home who struggle to survive from pay check to pay check.

I will not vote for any party which has lavish give aways that involve transfer payments from other Canadians.
People generally will say thank you we deserve it and blow the windfall on travel or new sleds or quads.
We are so entitled and spoiled and it's so embarrassing.

Low unemployment here and high wages because of government jobs, balanced budgets because we get, what is it 1.6 billion a year in transfer payments? How can you not have a balanced budget with free funding not tied to our taxes.

Please stop giving other peoples money away and create a sustainable Yukon economy based on a Yukon tax base.
Develop land at prices that young people can afford and help them get established.

Al, your friend should have included the NDP on his sign. They are even more Marxist than the Liberals. And if one thinks the liberal government put Yukoners in debt and deficit position, they haven't seen what the NDP would do. But, at my age, I won't have to pay for the mess.

North_of_60 on Mar 26, 2021 at 3:12 pm

@Max mack is correct. Most of those expensive "Green" initiatives only drive up electricity cost. For example, those who are affluent enough to afford solar get to sell their excess power for 21¢/kwh while water that could generate 7¢/kwh electricity is spilled. The rest of us are paying for that difference. Change the rules so the excess kwh is only 'banked' to offset their electricity use in the winter.
All of these Green Initiatives need to be reviewed for cost effectiveness and scrapped where they're not economical. People can donate their own money to support their ideologies; it's not our responsibility to subsidize their hobby.

"The Yukon Party would provide the Crown corporation with direct funding to recover the revenue shortfall"

By using everyone's tax dollars to make up the shortfall this is an indirect subsidy to the largest consumers of electricity and punishes those who use the least. I'm not sure if this is a practical solution since it is removing incentives to reduce power consumption.

Freezing power rates smacks of socialism. Has the Yukon party become the new NDP?
High power rates aren’t the issue, massive debt is. Drive around town; big trucks, all the toys, big houses that people could never afford if interest rates weren’t unsustainably low. Subsidizing Yukoners debt level isn’t the answer but it will buy votes.

Our power rebates are subsidized already. Power generation costs money, especially so in a small market. If anything, we should be paying the true costs and encourage the conservation initiatives.
The Yukon party had years in power to diversify the generation grid, and now Currie is concerned.

I would like to see some accountability for these rate increases. About 2-3 increases ago it was for infra-structure but the only thing mentioned was some repairs at Aishihik dam. I would like to see something that says where this money was spent categorically. That should not be too difficult.
I would also like to see the odd YDC board member come forward and state what they approved and why in general terms. These people are like the 'Illuminate'.
June this winter was nothing, you should have lived here when it was cold and tar paper shacks were the order of the day. It seemed that people complained a whole lot less.

This is a very clever move by the Yukon Party. Well done. You will likely hoodwink many people into thinking this will save them money long term.
The reality is that if rates are frozen for two years, they will bounce back twice as hard in years 3 and 4 unless Currie wants to put the territory in some serious debt trying to subsidize everyone's electrical bills going further down the road. Then another government will be forced to raise the rates by a larger amount again (like just happened) and the blame will be on the political party in government at the time and NOT the one who was responsible for compressing rates for so long beforehand.
The current jumps would not have been necessary had the previous Yukon Party govt not been using tax payers money to subsidize electricity bills for so long. And of course those who have the smallest bills end up massively subsidizing those rich folks who use the most since its everyone's tax money used to subsidize them.
People like Juniper who think this is great will end up having other government social programs they use clawed back in order to pay for this. Just like when Currie said he will find the extra $3 million needed for his daycare plan "within the existing Education budget".
Someone needs to tell him that money doesn't grow on trees.

I'd be far more impressed with all political leaders, all high level government "experts", managers etc...have their perks FROZEN, all wages rolled back retro to DDay for Kung-Flu fighting to CERB levels till this "plandemic" is over.

Complete hiring freeze for all government positions...even the alleged equity hires.

We have two teams leaned so far left they feel over.

I'll go one better. Freeze rates AND drop the useless and extremely expensive "green energy" initiatives. Build hydro if you want stable, relatively cheap power.

And drop the carbon tax. Our groceries MUST come 2000km up the highway. Many of us heat our homes with oil or propane.

Can't afford to heat my home because of Liberal policy, and the cost of food is sky high because of Liberal policy. What makes it worse were the lies from Sandy Silver when the carbon tax was rolled out. Where is my rebate to cover the loss? Micro modular nuclear is the only hope for a ‘green’ energy future in the Arctic. It’ll at least get us through the next two or three centuries until we figure out cold fusion.

Until then, needing to burn something to create power in the winter isn’t going away. Pretending icy rivers will get it done isn’t helping.

Entire energy sector is a joke. Some simple youtubing for an hour and you can get many free/clean energy mechanisms. One that's simple and easy would be to harness the Hydrogen from the water.. carbon tax is putting us all into poverty. They are literally taxing every breath you take as you exhale CO2.. let that sink in.. last thing we need is to give the government any more money, all for them just to hand it out all over the world while we pay record prices to heat our homes, etc.

Good plan. Now watch all the negativity from the leftys. So, how to pay for this? Simple, irradicate several social welfare programs that keep certain lazy abouts from working and turning into alcohol and druggy vegetables. There is a lot of work out there, since the immigrants coming in are working at least two jobs a day. More people working, more taxes, less government spending, less alcoholism, less drug addiction and less crime. Now, why haven't the left wing Marxist Liberals figured that out. Oh wait, they did. But that would eliminate their power over the people and prevent them from governing. It would mean Conservatives would be able to form governments in Canada. And that goes against their new world reset agenda.

Yes ! And thank you.
This is typical Liberal BS "Patch said the current rate increases Yukoners are experiencing are due to the Yukon Party’s last rate freeze while in government." BS - put simply. Patch you need to sell your snake oil some other place, and oh, take the rest of that Liberal lot with you. It is a wonder you didn't blame Harper.

These people have increased the cost of living on everything they have touched: a host of user fees have increased (some even doubled) - some dramatically, recycling rebates have virtually diminished to $.05 per item, they have added an additional admin fee on recyclables just because they can, they have wholeheartedly endorsed the carbon tax on even the essentials like heating fuels while the NWT told his highness in Ottawa "absolutely no", our cost of living has gone up in leaps in bounds and the so called neutral tax is anything but, and the list just goes on and on. Between these creatures and those in Ottawa we are not better off - in fact the opposite !

My neighbour has gone so far as to have a sign at the bottom of his drive - it reads: "The Liberal candidate is not welcome and will be considered a trespasser." About sums up the feelings of a lot of folks. My hope is that it becomes the new rage in the Yukon.

We are looking at utilities poverty now. Some government should look at capping how much electricity we use. The only people that were warm this winter work for government, SA, Northwestel, ATCO. The rest of us were in sweaters, double pjs. Extra blankets. It was a cold, miserable winter. It did NOT help that the Liberals cancelled the subsidy that actually helped EVERYONE. Cost an extra 1200-1500$ a year more for most families.
