WATERSHED ELECTION – Larry Bagnell (left) gives the OK to now-Conservative MP Ryan Leef on the evening of May 2, 2011 after Leef ended Bagnellsʼ 11-year occupation of the Yukon seat.
The Yukon's former MP has officially entered the race for the Liberal Party of Canada's territorial nomination for the 2015 election.
The Yukon's former MP has officially entered the race for the Liberal Party of Canada's territorial nomination for the 2015 election.
Larry Bagnell is the first person to put his name forward for consideration.
A second person is expected to enter the fray, according to Jason Cunning, the local chair of the party's election readiness committee.
Bagnell lost a tight race to Conservative MP Ryan Leef in the May 2, 2011 election after having served as the Yukon's member of Parliament since 2000.
"Since the last election, which was very close, a lot of people asked me, encouraged me to run again, and I want to give those people the opportunity at least to try and make that happen,” he told the Star Thursday afternoon.
But Bagnell, 64, is re-entering politics for other reasons too.
He wants to get back to helping Yukoners navigate complicated federal programs – and he wants to make Canada a better place for his children.
Bagnell and his wife, Melissa, have two young children, Aurora, five, and Dawson, two.
"I'm actually really gratified that I was home during the earliest, formative years,” Bagnell said of being able to spend more time with his family over the last three years.
But after a family discussion, he and Melissa decided entering the race is the right choice.
"We understand the challenges, we've been through it before to some extent, so we know the scheduling, but we're also going to do our part to make sure that the Yukon's good for everyone and that way it will be also good for our children,” he said.
"You have do your part to make sure that the Canada they're going to live in is one you believe in, one that fits your values.
"Some of the things that have happened in Ottawa lately have really upset a lot of Yukoners.”
Bagnell is critical of many of the Conservative government's cuts to services.
Those include reductions to Parks Canada, heritage and aboriginal programs, and the controversial closure of the local Canada Revenue Agency office.
"It didn't make any sense; we have a right to those services,” said the former MP.
"It probably brought more income tax into the federal government than it cost because of people knowing how to do it right,” he said.
"I was a constant champion for the North, making sure the North's voice got heard,” he said.
"Often, we're different, we have different needs – a perfect example is food mail. I fought against the changes that have so drastically hurt that for the people of the Arctic.”
Bagnell also noted his record promoting tourism and anti-poverty measures.
"When you have over 900 people in Whitehorse accessing the food bank, you know that's just ridiculous.
"We're one of the wealthiest communities in the world, so something has to be done to deal with that type of imbalance,” he said.
Other priorities Bagnell listed included the implementation of land claims, which he noted aren't being implemented in the spirit of the agreements, according to Canada's Auditor General, and the development of a truly fair Elections Act.
Bagnell was pleased to see party leader Justin Trudeau spend a few days in the Yukon last summer, and had the opportunity to spend sometime with him and his young family.
"I think he's very open to listening,” said Bagnell, adding, "He's a very good family man; I could see that with him and his family, and I think that will resonate a chord with Canadians.”
In a news release Thursday, Bagnell said he thinks people want to see a re-match between him and Leef – and he's prepared to give them one.
Leef isn't shying away either.
"I wish him the best of luck. I think it is good that there are credible and interested candidates putting their name forward for the 2015 election,” the 40-year-old MP told the Star Thursday.
"Now it's time for him to get through the nomination process. I do not think it will be an absolute acclamation for him, but the best of luck as he goes through that process.”
No one has publicly announced an intention to oppose Leef for the Conservative nomination.
While there's no official closing date for the Liberal nominations to be entered, Cunning said, the party is hoping to have a candidate sometime in October.
In the 2011 election, Leef won with 5,422 votes, or 132 more than Bagnell's 5,290. The Green Party's John Streicker received 3,307; and New Democrat Kevin Barr earned 2,308.

I'm not a Liberal, but I'd be happy to vote for Larry Bagnell again because he's a good politician and a hard worker. By the way, I didn't want the long gun registry scrapped, and I live here too.
It seems like Ryan Leef has done nothing but defend Conservative actions, even when they clearly hurt the Yukon. Remember when the CRA tax office closed, and when Parks Canada laid a bunch of our local people off?

Charles -- Larry lost by 130 votes. The main reason being, in addition to those still -- still! -- bleating about the long gun registry, which must be some kind of symptom of a serious obsessive compulsive disorder, is that the kind of people who spend sleepless nights stewing over the perceived loss of the ability to shoot a gun, to the exclusion of every other principle, are also people who never turn down a chance to vote.
Whereas others, who fancy themselves politically sophisticated, torment themselves with questions like, will I always get my way if I vote for him? What about this other guy who probably won't win, and who I don't know that much about, but I can make a "statement" if I vote his way? Should I write a letter about proportional representation instead?
The vote matters. It's crazy that that discussion has managed to blind people to that.
Even Ralph Nader admitted he was wrong about portraying Al Gore as just like the other guys.
I can't think of anything that would dissuade me from voting Liberal. And by the way, not "everybody" in the Yukon wanted Larry to vote against the gun registry.

@ 'Anyone'. So voting for a party that cost Canada major $$ for the Long Gun Registry is being in your right mind? Best shake the container of your mind. Larry was a good MP until he talked out of both sides of his mouth & forgot who made him an MP. Whether it was Gun Reg or something else - do not double cross your constituents. Had Larry been loyal to YT run as an Independent, he may have been re elected & had as much clout as being a Liberal. Best politician? Maybe you have not been in YT long, but party politics aside, Eric Neilsen served us well for many years.

Anyone but the Conservatives! on May 12, 2014 at 1:23 am
Yukoners have a look at what Canada was and look at what is has become. I am not sure you can be in your right mind and vote for a Harper government.
Larry has been by far the best MP to ever represent Yukon. He is what a MP is supposed to be.
All MPs are beholden of the Party they sign up with and that is not going to change anytime soon.
Larry has my vote.

Sorry Larry. You betrayed us big time when it came to the Long Gun Registry. You will not be getting my vote.

I am not a liberal...nor would I ever be a conservative. I did vote for Larry in the last election as I voted for the individual, not the party. The comments about him being old/tired etc. are unfounded. He worked hard for the Yukon and wasn't there to make an appearance for political gain (kind of like the entire Yukon Party showing up during a fundraiser for a boy with cancer--showboating). Larry worked hard not just in Ottawa, but also at local events well before he got into politics. When you run, Larry, you can count on my vote.

Honest Hard Working and true to what he believes on May 11, 2014 at 11:54 am
I have known Larry for many years and I am a conservative. Larry has worked hard for what he believed in and he has been good for the Yukon. He did things that was required but might not fit with Yukoners belief. I do not agree with the present leader of the Liberals. He is dangerous to Canadian economy just like his father. Canada is still paying for his fathers disrespect of Canadian people. Ryan is a very good person and man. The Yukon is lucky to have two great people wanting to represent them in Ottawa.

I don't like Leef at all but I will never vote for Bagnell again. He put his party ahead of the people who put him in office. Yukoner's. Remember the long gun registry?? As they say. Once bitten twice shy!

Larry represents the Liberal Party first; not necessarily what's best for the Yukon.

Larry's 'Best Before' date has expired...and it wasn't even that good when he had the opportunity. You may recall he was the federal flag bearer when Yukon went through its lost weekend with all things Liberal, and we know the outcome of that experiment.
I remain cautious of a man who tows the party line over voting the will of his constituents. If he did it before, he'll do it again.

I am happy to see Larry running..Ryan Leef has been a huge disappointment... There isn't even a name for his ineffectiveness
Streiker will NEVER get another vote from me..even after voters made it clear that they didn't want Sima to get more tax dollars John voted to give them them the big bucks..I have no confidence that he would be an effective representative..I also dropped him an email and told him so at the time.
Larry worked his butt off for us..go look at his attendance record..so he's paid the price for voting against us in the gun registry..it's time to move on.. Good luck Larry

Both Leef and Bagnell are good people but maybe it's time to send the very reasonable and intelligent John Streicker to Ottawa. Looking at the numbers if the NDP withdrew next election the Greens might win it.

Larry had one opportunity to win over Yukoners with the long gun registry. He acted as a spineless pawn. I will never vote for him again. I was not a Ryan Leaf supporter but after meeting him I would vote for him again.

Enough of candidate Bagnell, he has had his years/terms and kick at can, nothing to show.
Let us not forget how worn out and generally run down he appeared in his final term, how he was only going through the motions in his last years in office. In reality he accomplished very little for the Yukon.
Larry is a nice man but give the Yukon a new MP, not an used one.

I really can't see Ryan Leef surviving the next election. That being said, I am hoping to see a fresh face (or two) that can provide new ideas. Larry definitely isn't that fresh face and his ideas belong in a previous decade.
