We want to broaden the spectrum of local opinions
The Whitehorse Star has listened attentively to the chorus of Yukoners who were disappointed in an editorial decision we made last week.

We welcome the opportunity to engage with our readers. In recent history, we have seen newsrooms across the country manoeuvre similar criticisms, particularly as Black Lives Matter protests have heightened demand for representative media coverage.
We understand that we are living in dynamic times, and that media outlets are responsible for shifting in tandem with the communities we serve.
The Whitehorse Star has implemented a change in policy for editorial submissions that will better represent our community and amplify a broader diversity of voices.
Effective immediately, commentaries and letters submitted to the Whitehorse Star will be subject to a peer-review process before publication.
This will expand our capacity for fact-checking and establishing dialogue with the writers who submit to us.
The Whitehorse Star has additionally committed to broadening the spectrum of local content in our Opinion section.
Going forward, we will actively diversify our editorial pages by seeking out analyses from community leaders, organizers, researchers and members of marginalized communities on topics related to their expertise and lived experience.
We hope expanding the breadth of our local content will be informative and provide a wider scope of perspective to our readers.
We look forward to curating an Opinion section that is representative of the Yukon’s diverse population.
We are accepting submissions of editorial analysis at letters@whitehorsestar.com.
