I never thought I’d see the Star’s demise
It was May 4, 1971 that I walked down the steps of the CPAir flight from Vancouver to be greeted by Whitehorse Star editor Flo Whyard to start an amazing career as a reporter in a vibrant and booming Yukon.

The Star was a community newspaper with its feet planted squarely in its role to keep citizens informed about the events and changes that would have a direct impact on their daily lives.
All great newspapers and news organizations share a united goal to serve their readers, listeners and viewers honestly and truthfully with information that is vetted and verified to confirm its accuracy and truthfulness.
Never, ever thought that this day – the retirement of the Whitehorse Star as a community institution – would ever occur.
We should also wish the new Yukon Star all the encouragement and support that we can provide in its pledge to provide timely, accurate and the wide coverage of events and changes that will inform, touch, help and impact our lives and our way of life.
The evolution to a media outlet with a new vision to serve the community by combining the modern digital technology with the tried and true print medium has the potential to be a game changer in our daily lives in all corners of this territory and we, the readers and subscribers, can be thankful for that new emerging service.
