Yukon fourth in medal count at the Arctic Winter Games

The Yukon is golden after the territories’ talented athletes pulled out all the stops Monday at the Arctic Winter Games.
Team Yukon won 16 medals after the first day of competition in Grande Prairie.
Fabian Brooke won a gold medal in cross country skiing for the five-kilometre classic event. His winning time was 15:35.10 in the juvenile male category.
Also winning the the same race was Katie Peters, with a gold medal-winning time of 17:49.20 in the juvenile female category.
In the 2.5-km classic, Morgan Paul won a gold for her time of 9:23.30 in the midget female category.
In speed skating, Heather Clarke scored a gold medal in the1,000-metre individual junior female event. Her time was 1:44.23.
Rachel Kinvig scored a gold in dog mushing for the 7.5-km four dog race in the juvenile coed division. Her time was 7:20.77.
Team Yukon won two gold medals in snowshoeing in the 2.5-km juvenile category.
Sarah Burke-Forsyth had a time of 13:54.27 for the females and Kieran Halliday finished in 11:36.43 for the males.
Galena Roots took the bronze medal in the female event as well with a time of 14:58.55, and Aidan Bradley scored bronze for the males finishing in 13:02.93.
Ben Kinvig took home a silver in dog mushing for the 10-km junior coed six dog race. His time was 7:08.37.
Team Yukon rallied to a silver medal in Dene Games Monday as well. In the hand games event, Madison Allen, Teah Dickson, Natane Primozic and Tayler Wallevane came together to bring home the silver medal.
Anna Rivard won a silver medal in Arctic Sports for the junior female Kneel Jump event. Her distance was 1.19-metres.
Team Yukon flag bearer Erin Oliver-Beebe earned a silver medal in the 7.5-km biathlon for junior females. She finished in 36:16.70.
Logan Roots won a silver in the 5-km snowshoe for his time of 22:09.02 in the junior male category.
In the 5-km snowshoe biathlon, Aven Knutson took home a bronze for the Yukon with a time of 57:41 in the junior female division.
Kayla Hallonquist won a bronze in the juvenile female snowboarding slopestyle event with a final score of 15.3.
Just short of medals in fourth place were Corey Baxter and Tom Fulop for the kneel jump, Anna Jacobsen for the five-km snowshoe biathlon, Alexander Chisholme and Max Melvin-McNutt for the snowboarding slopestyle.
Team Yukon was also shy of a bronze in the junior female hand games for Dene Games.
Team Yukon is currently in fourth place in the medal count, with seven gold medals, five silver and four bronze for a total of 16. Leading the medal count is Team Alaska with 44.
