A Skagway ambulance returning from a medevac trip to Carcross early this morning crashed on the South Klondike Highway, sending two first responders to hospital.

The emergency vehicle was driving at around 1:30 this morning when it touched the soft shoulder at the side of the highway and lost control, Skagway fire chief Jeremy Simmons said in a statement.

“When attempting to correct the skid, the ambulance tipped over onto the passenger side and slid into the ditch,” the statement says.

Two of the responders were medevaced to Juneau for further treatment, while the other two escaped with minimal injuries.

The Skagway News is reporting the crash took place at mile 39.5 of the highway.

A Whitehorse Fire Rescue truck was called to provide backup at the scene.

Alaska officials say more information will be released as it becomes available.
