STOP, ALREADY! – Snow almost obscures this stop sign seen this morning at the corner of Cook Street and Sixth Avenue in downtown Whitehorse. Residents are running out of places to pile the fluffy white stuff and more is predicted. Below: the heavy snowfalls of late are proving a blessing for skiers this month, such as those in the recent Grey Mountain Lions Don Sumanik classic race, seen during the mass start.

After more than a week of heavy snowfall, Mt. Sima is about to crest one metre of the white stuff.

Sam Oettli, the mountain’s outdoor operations manager, told the Star today he dug a snow pit last night to confirm the snow depth.

There was 95 cm as of last night, but Oettli guessed the hill has received another five centimetres since then, with another five or so expected.

“Since the 20th, we’ve had over 50 centimetres of snow,” he said.

The conditions at Sima are “like nothing (he’s) ever seen before.

“I’ve been riding this hill since it opened, and I’ve been working here for 15 years, and to have this much snow this early in the season is unbelievable,” Oettli said.

“It’s pretty amazing. We have a base right now of 45 to 50 centimeters on almost every single run.”

The Yukon public seems to have noticed the fine conditions too.

Oettli said the mountains been extremely busy. Staff guess they averaged between 400 and 450 people both Saturday and Sunday.

“Even today, it’s getting pretty busy; there’s people I think sneaking out of work and coming up here,” he said.

Sima is open everyday until Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Starting Jan. 6, the mountain will be open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for the same hours.

Now all Sima has to do is get some revenue out of it. Try staying opened more and later in the spring. It isn’t an option it is a necessity.
