Roots sets pave in Intersport run
The hottest Tuesday evening of the summer produced some fast results at the weekly Intersport 5 km Run and Walk.
The hottest Tuesday evening of the summer produced some fast results at the weekly Intersport 5 km Run and Walk.
With the grueling Yukon River Trail Marathon less than a week away, Tuesday night’s race was for many of the almost 30 runners and walkers the last high intensity workout before Sunday’s marathon.
While Logan Roots (18:28) was the star of the evening, finishing first overall, for the third week in a row, the Sullivan sisters put on a running clinic. This week it was Bill Parry (18:37) who was the beneficiary of their ferocious pacing.
Parry, who recently placed second in his age category (55-59) at the Osoyoos Desert Half Ironman, went stride for stride with Krestena Sullivan (18:39) over the five-km course. In the sprint to the finish line, Parry finished just two strides ahead of Krestena.
Maura Sullivan (19:08) was both the second fastest woman and part of the next fastest pack of runners that consisted of Keith Thaxter (19:06), Joel Macht (19:18) and Harrison Kwok (19:18).
Sheri Hogeboom (23:13) was the third-place woman. She also finished near the front of a group of four male runners – Terry Boone (22:59), Bob Bowerman (23:28) and Jud and Marcus Dueling (23:29).
The six race walkers pushed the envelope in spite of the 25 C temperature. Ruth Hall (34:25), the most successful Tuesday night race walker this season, began outpacing Arlene Ogden (35:08) and
Tanya Astika (35:31) at the two-km mark to cross the finish line first, just one second behind runner Charlie Roots (34:24).
The next big event will be the Yukon River Trail Marathon on Sunday.
Recently voted by the magazine Canadian Running as one of Canada’s top 10 trail races, it will see
up to 300 runners competing in the marathon and half-marathon, as well as two and four-person relay teams.
The race will feature competitors from Australia, Germany, Japan and the U.S. The marathoners will range in age from 19 years to 61 year old Rob McWilliam, a former Yukoner who has run in 114 marathons and ultra marathons.
