BLOCK PARTY – Vanier Crusaders’ teammates Tristan Olynyk (10) and Jonathan Koltun (2) go up for a block against the F.H. Collins Warriors in Dawson City.

The Porter Creek Rams and F.H. Collins Warriors took the gold medals in the 9/10 and 11/12 boys and girls divisions of play at the 2012 Dawson Invitational Volleyball Tournament, held at Robert Service School in Dawson City last weekend.

Teams from Vanier Catholic High School took silver in all of the senior matches.

Most of these were hard-fought games that saw the leads seesaw back and forth a number of times.

The two-court gymnasium was host to 64 volleyball matches in just over 48 hours.

Along with teams from R.S.S., players travelled from Tantalus School in Carmacks, St. Elias Community School in Haines Junction, and F.H. Collins, Porter Creek Secondary School and Vanier Catholic High School in Whitehorse.

In total, more than 200 Yukon students played for 24 teams.

In the Grade 9/10 Girls Division P.C.S.S. defeated Vanier with scores of 25-4 and 25-17.

In the Grade 11/12 Girls Division P.C.S.S. defeated Vanier with scores of 25-20 and 25-19.

In the Grade 9/10 Boys Division F.H. Collins defeated Vanier with scores of 25-23 and 25-19.

In the Grade 11/12 Boys Division F.H. Collins defeated Vanier with scores of 25-20 and 25-18.

In a Grade 7 Triple Ball contest the Robert Service Green team defeated the Gold 23-25, 25-21 and 15-4.

Students were also able to take a well-deserved break from the gymnasium and attend a Hallowe’en-themed dance in the Oddfellows Hall ballroom on Friday night.

Local volunteer broadcaster CFYT-fm ran both radio and television coverage of the action in the gym throughout the tournament – those 7 a.m. mornings being the earliest the station has ever been on the air.

This event could not be a success without the involvement of a lot of volunteers.
