Yukon residents searching for a Christmas tree north of the city last Sunday instead found a pickup truck driven by a Whitehorse man missing since Dec. 7.

The Yuletide lumberjacks reported to police “what they thought was an abandoned vehicle,” not realizing it was linked with Robert Schellenberg Whitehorse RCMP spokesman Const. Dean Hoogland said today.

“They were just leisurely looking for a Christmas tree at the time,” he said.

The blue 1995 GMC 2500 truck was found in a gravel pit 20 kilometres northwest of Whitehorse just off the Alaska Highway.

More than 20 search and rescue volunteers, RCMP officers and police dog service members carried out an extensive ground search and two-hour aerial search of the area.

No other clues to the 47-year-old Schellenberg’s whereabouts arose.

Police also examined the vehicle, since returned to the registered owner.

“There’s nothing to indicate foul play,” Hoogland said.

He noted the search yielded no other helpful information.

Schellenberg, last seen by his roommate, was thought to be heading to work on a Saturday morning nearly two weeks ago.

He never showed up.

“To date, we’ve checked all social media, we’ve checked banks, we’ve spoken to family members, commercial transportation,” Hoogland told the Star last week.

No online nor bank activity has occurred since the date of his disappearance.

“Family has been updated by RCMP. The investigation goes on,” Hoogland said today.

Schellenberg is described as a white male, standing five feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

He was last seen in blue jeans, boots, a grey coat and may be wearing a toque, police said.
