The Whitehorse Minor Hockey Association’s annual Mustangs Night will expand this year to become Hockey Day in Whitehorse.

The yearly hockey ritual will take place Dec. 1 at Takhini Arena and will once again feature the visiting Aldergrove Bruins.

The Midget Bruins previously played a three-game mini-series against the Mustangs in February.

This time, both a midget and bantam team will make the trip north from Aldergrove, a town of 12,000 nestled between Langley and Abbotsford, B.C.

Each team will play three games – Friday night, Saturday and Sunday morning.

“This is going to be our first annual Hockey Day in Whitehorse/Mustangs Night,” said Jody Fobe, a WMHA director and event organizer. “What we wanted to do this year was incorporate all of minor hockey, and not just celebrate the rep side.

“People that just want to come in and take in a great day of hockey can just come and watch some kids from five, six years old all the way up to 17 and just see how the game has evolved.”

Including the younger players is important, Fobe said.

“Maybe they want to be that Mustang player when they’re 16.”

Fobe said Aldergrove’s continued interest in the Arctic provides an easy opponent for the Mustangs to host.

“It’s hard to draw teams to come to the North to play,” she admitted.

The weekend will include a variety of festivities, including a family pancake breakfast featuring celebrity servers on Saturday at Takhini Arena, a food drive and plenty of raffles, 50/50 draws and a silent auction.

An autographed Detroit Red Wings’ Jordin Tootoo jersey will be raffled off.

Hockey action will get underway Friday night with the Bantam Mustangs facing their Aldergrove counterparts at 5 p.m. at the Canada Games Centre, and the Midget A Mustangs taking on the Bruins at 5:45 p.m. at Takhini Arena.

The Bantam A clubs will square off again Saturday during Hockey Day in Whitehorse at 6:45 p.m., prior to the Midget A showdown at 9 p.m. Both games will be held at Takhini.

The teams will finish off their three-game series with games on Sunday at the Canada Games Centre.

The Midget B Mustangs will also get a chance to play in front of a crowd, as they have a regular rec league game versus the Kwanlin Kanucks scheduled for 5 p.m. at Takhini on Saturday.

The event marks a unique opportunity for the Mustangs to challenge their peers in front of their home crowd.

“Unfortunately, we don’t get a chance to see them play at full speed as much as everyone would like to because often they’re competing with their peers out of territory,” said WMHA president Carl Burgess.

“It’s a great opportunity to get the hockey community together again to celebrate and see some fantastic hockey.”

Special events surrounding the festivities will continue to be announced in the coming weeks.

Proceeds will go to the Mustangs’ team travel budgets, the Whitehorse food bank, and the WMHA.
