Many Yukoners have already voted

Almost a quarter of eligible Yukon voters have cast their ballots in the advanced poll for Tuesday's federal election.

Almost a quarter of eligible Yukon voters have cast their ballots in the advanced poll for Tuesday’s federal election.

According to Sue Edelman, the returning officer for the Yukon riding, 23 per cent of the electorate have made their decision. That’s a record for federal elections in the territory.

“I think it’s a reflection of what Elections Canada has done as far as making voting more accessible,”  Edelman said this morning.

“I hope this trend continues because it certainly helps us ... we want people to vote and we’re glad they did.”

Since the election was called Sept. 7, Yukoners have been able to vote at Elections Canada offices in Dawson City, Watson Lake and Whitehorse, or by special ballot through the mail.

Edelman said of the 22,000 eligible voters in the territory, many took advantage of advance polls in all the Yukon’s communities Oct. 3, 4 and 6.

“And we also had a number of students who live outside the Yukon who voted by special ballot,” she added.
