Intersport fun run, walk results

Is it spring? Fall?

Is it spring? Fall?

No, it’s Whitehorse summer weather.

While most of the rest of Canada and U.S. are roasting in an almost unbearable heat wave, Whitehorse is enjoying unseasonably cool temperatures.

That proved rewarding for some of the 20 participants at Tuesday night’s Intersport five-kilometre run and walk.

Inspired by the pacing of Western Canada Summer Games runners Brittany Smith-Pearson and Logan Boehmer, Coralie Ullyett captured first place in the women’s five km and posted a season personal best with a time of 23 minutes, 55 seconds.

Two well-known cardio machines, Wendy Tayler (26:08) and Hayley Henderson (26:24), placed second and third, respectively. Running one of her fastest times of the season, Debora Kitchen took fourth place with a time of 27:03.

In the men’s five km, Tom Ullyett placed first in 19:53, followed by stalwart Terry Boone (23:13) and Ben Yu-Schott (23:37), who pushed his daughter Callie in a chariot. Making his first appearance of the season, Clarke LaPrairie finished fourth with a time of 26:26.

The 10-km distance featured Dan Macdonald (45:35) in first, Keith Lay (51:55) in second and Brian Mottus (52:50) in third. The race walking side of the event saw Jane Haydock (35:54) continue with her break-out season, finishing in first place ahead of staunch race walker Arlene Ogden (36:01) and suddenly-speedy Susan Dennehy (36:15).

The next events on the running calendar are Thursday night’s weekly trail run at 6:30 p.m., and the Mt. Lorne Mis-Adventure Cross Country Run on Sunday. Check out the Athletics Yukon website for details.
