Carmacks residents face charges after drugs found

Two Carmacks residents were arrested after the RCMP discovered a marijuana grow operation in that community last week.

Two Carmacks residents were arrested after the RCMP discovered a marijuana grow operation in that community last week.

A 43-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were taken into custody last Thursday when Carmacks and Pelly Crossing RCMP executed a search warrant on a Carmacks property, police said today.

Seized from the property were 14 marijuana plants and a small quantity of what police believe to be marijuana seeds.

Both arrested persons are facing charges of production of cannabis marijuana.

The man was released on a promise to appear and the woman was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police are not identifying the accused until they have appeared in court.

“Substance abuse, either by drugs or alcohol, is a significant problem in many communities,” said Sgt. Don Rogers.

“Even though this was a relatively small bust compared to the (B.C.) Lower Mainland grow ops, it nonetheless is important, and shows the community that the RCMP is working to make our communities’ safety a priority.”

Oh please!  Not more of this abject stupidity over a couple of pot plants!!  Geez, great job RCMP, go ahead and pat yourselves on the back for your big bust.  Now the people of Carmacks can drive to Whitehorse to get their weed. No point in keeping it local, eh?  Or they can simply go to the local establishments and get drunk on government approved booze.  Maybe they’ll end up on death’s door in an RCMP cell just to round things off.  And guess what?  Not one person, ever, has died from marijuana toxicity.  Don’t believe me?  Check out the House of Lords report on marijuana.. I’ve got it in my favourites and will be back with the url.

Nice work at guaranteeing security for out of town dealers and the government booze operations.

The laws need to change!

From the Select Committee on Science and Technology, Ninth Report; British House of Lords:

4.3   The acute toxicity of cannabis and the cannabinoids is very low; no-one has ever died as a direct consequence of recreational or medical use (DH QQ 219223).

The Canadian Senate Select Committee also concluded an extensive report in 2001, I believe it was, coming to the same conclusion.  Alcohol is a whole lot more dangerous than marijuana, in fact so is tobacco, butter, salt, coffee, sugar and many other legal substances.  Stop demonizing this substance.  I’d way rather see people recreationally using marijuana than any other drug out there.  And I’ve worked in the system and have seen the outcomes of a fair bit of stuff.

It amazes me that this type BS double standard is still accepted by our educated society.

You wonder why we have to hide the glue… to say that substances are a significant problem in the communities, and then take away a homegrown alternative that is truly insignificant compared to the alternatives, and the very effects of application of the hypocritical laws against marijuana.

As soon as our brainwashed, deaf legislators take their pensions, this will change.

I decide not to partake in the herb, but I do that as an adult with educated decision. I also do this with utter contempt for the backwards law that allows me to get hammered on booze (and still allow me to possess a vehicle in the trust I won’t abuse it), but will not allow me choose my headspace.

And when I get sick and suffer serious pain, I hope it is an option above the opiates prescribed by our law-hampered physicians. But hear me, when you legislators get old, you better look out, because I’m gonna make damn sure you’re going to have to go to a drug dealer to get your Preparation-H.

HAHA! What a joke 14 plants! in BC they would just consider that personal use and let you keep it. Imagine all the tax dollars being used up just for a few plants. But I do agree that drugs are a major problem in these small communities, but everyone has smoked pot at least once and I bet these cops have too. Now if it was cocaine that would be a different story.

what A joke

14 plants??  You’ve got to be kidding me.. That’s considered a “drug bust”??? Meanwhile there’s how many kilo’s of harmful substances out there that can KILL people. With 14 plants, why wouldn’t the rcmp just knock on their door and let them know they were aware of the situation and to dispose of it otherwise charges would be laid? Pathetic if you ask me. Marijuana should be the last worry on their list of drugs to seize. Especially 14 plants. Get your priorities straight RCMP and go for the crap that’s doing the serious damage. Quit focusing on a little green plant that half of canadians smoke. GO GREEN not DESTROY GREEN!

Oh god it’s just pot! Who cares! Go get the rest of the coke dealers still hiding around in this town. I know for a fact you missed alot of the RCMP. Leave the poor weed dealers alone, pot isn’t hurting anyone.

Guess what, many of us in town smoke weed and suprise, we have great jobs we do well, pay our bills and are quite intellectual. We could give a shit about the pot dealers. Get ride of the hard drugs and then maybe I’ll be impressed by our pathetic policing.

Drug Dealers!!! go back to where you come from!! Your not even from Carmacks to come to our small community and wanting to hurt our young people.  You should be ashame of yourself to think you will get away with your drug dealings and grow OPS.  Can’t you read them signs before you enter town.  I am so happy you got caught!! The community of Carmacks will not tolerate people like You to hurt our young people and to get rich of them.  Aren’t YOU! rich enough with your business and all!

Bittman,
Right on! I wrote my final research paper in college on medicinal marijuana and came to the same conclusion (FYI I got an A).

I find it a waste of tax dollars to persue a harmful substance such as pot.

RCMP you still suck and you can’t call this a drug bust. I call it a home invasion hahaha.

I can only sit and laugh while I read these comments.

Pot is an illegal substance, the RCMP did their job by busting them.

Until it is made legal every single pot plant should be confiscated.

As for whether it should be legal that is something I am against I have never smoked it myself and when I am around people who have I can’t wait to get away from the area/room.

The stuff stinks to high heaven plus it makes people act like dumba**‘s.

Funny how they failed to mention the age of these so called plants… I wouldn’t be surprised if they were but wee seedlings yielding not a single bud…  What a waste.

Hilarious that they find marijuana the dope of the devil…. leave the crack heads, meth heads, and needleheads to wonder about town….  You all see them… they hang out in groups, in their own filth…..

Pot makes some anxious, some relax.. some giggly… some sleepy… some hungry… still illegal (for some reason) nonetheless…...

Salvia is legal & sold in random places (adult stores for one.. ususally)  .. its a sage plant which, when consumed, makes one literally high & useless…  leaving the being with crazy trips, and technicolor dreams…..  try it.  I dare you.

....the only thing pot has ever led me to….was the fridge!!!

To DG:

Ya, and Rosa Parks should not have sat down on the bus until the laws changed.

And Chinese men should not have loved Caucasian women until the laws changed.

And African slaves should not have run away from their ‘masters’ until the laws changed.

How do you think unjust laws change, exactly?  Not by waiting for the RCMP and the politicians.  Citizens almost always have to suffer and take the fall to pave the way to freedom for those who come after.

DG, you’d be surprised at contributing, intelligent, gentle people who smoke a little marijuana.  Sure, maybe they do act a little silly, but no worse than others after having their cider.

And I won’t even get started on the medical patients and so many other reasons marijuana should be legal.  Controlled substance, fine.  But legal.

Enough already!
