Three Yukoners competing at the Special Olympics World Games in Austria this week have all won at least one medal.

Ernuest Chua, Tijana McCarthy and Mike Sumner were all selected for the Canadian team last year.

Chua, competing in cross-country skiing at this year’s Games, had his first race early in the week. He skied to a time of 3:42.50 in the 500-metre, beating his previous best time by 55 seconds.

In the one kilometre race, he shaved 65 seconds off his personal best in the preliminary race and an additional 39 seconds in the final, to finish in fourth place.

On Wednesday, Chua made the podium in the 4 x 1K relay with his team for silver.

Then today, he skied a blistering fast 500m final to finish in 3:01.2 to win the race.

McCarthy, competing in the sport of figure skating, had a solid performance in the elements portion of the routine to set herself up for a strong free skate.

And she kept up her strong performance, placing second overall in the level 1 ladies competition.

Teammate Sumner, also competing in figure skating, finished second in his elements and won silver after performing his free skate.

In 2013, Sumner was the only Yukoner to be named to Team Canada for the Special Olympic World Winter Games.

He won silver at those Games, competing in men’s level 1.

The three athletes named to Team Canada this time show the depth of talent within Special Olympics Yukon.

“We’re so proud of all @SpecialOYukon athletes representing Yukon on Team Canada! Congrats Ernest Chua on winning gold! #yukon,” tweeted Premier Sandy Silver this morning.

Special Olympics Yukon has been keeping the community apprised of the athletes’ performances and adventures in Austria on Facebook.

Team Canada athletes have been competing in six sports at the Games: floor hockey, figure skating, speed skating, alpine skiing, nordic skiing and snowshoeing.

The competition wraps up Saturday.
