There was a little Yukon flavour at the Norway Cup International Soccer Tournament.

The U18 girls team, under coach Sarah Hanson’s tutelage made the trip overseas at the end of July to play in the 25-team tournament.

With one of the player’s moms from Norway, Hanson said the tournament is something they’ve been considering for awhile.

“This year we finally pulled it together,” she said.

The girls finished at the top of their group in the round-robin, before bowing out in the quarter-final.

They faced a tough team in their final round-robin game, said Hanson, which is when the team showed mental strength and fortitude. Up until that point, they had been dominant in their play.

“I think the girls were maybe surprised we hadn’t quite started the game as well as they could have,” she said. “The girls really rallied to have a great second half.”

The roster included: Malorie Hanson, Line Jensen, Christine Moser, Jamie Joe-Hudson, Jamie McLeish, Davina McLeod, Samantha Ng, Sammy Demchuk, Maggie Fakete, Alizee Salisee (injured) and Jayden Demchuk (injured).

Hanson said she hopes her team realized that “even though you’re from the Yukon, you can compete with teams from the Outside.

“I hope they came away from it realizing they have lots of opportunities.”

For many athletes on the team, it will be their last tournament together.

“(It’s) neat for the girls to be in a different country and play soccer in a different country and realize they're competitive,” said Hanson.

Can't wait for the next headline about the "soccer gentlemen"....! Whitehorse Star, would you gender your headline if it was a boys team? My bet is it would say "Yukon soccer team....". And Ladies? Well hope they minded their manners.
