The Yukon Orienteering Association went for an outing Wednesday.

Fifty seven participants came out on a lovely evening, convening in the pullout above Canyon City. Using the Chadburn Lake map, four courses were designed by Rachel Moser and Barbara Scheck. This was an excellent turnout for a late summer evening. Of note were the groups with three generations of orienteers, a strong youth showing and the hot competition in the Expert category.

The Novice Course of 1.9 km was a perfect length for the multi generational family groups. The frequent trail junctions offered many opportunities for positive reinforcement as the children delighted in using the electronic timing system.

Noelia Turcotte and Rima Khouri - 27:51
Eoin and Tadhg Sheridan - 37:27
Wendy Tayler, Chelsea Mitchell, and Atticus Mitchell-Richards - 38:11
Justine Scheck, Derek, Linden, and Selwynn Cronmiller - 55:41

The 2.5 km Intermediate course offered some route choice options as participants were required to leave the trails. Another three-generation family group tackled this course. There were strong showings from the Wise brothers and Ian Turcotte as well.

Daniel Dreiseitl - 23:21
Judith Van Gulick - 27:26
Declan and Nigel Wise - 27:50
Joan Stanton, Madeleine Williams, Miya Nishikawa and Gloria Mok - 33:43
Ian Turcotte - 34:58

The Advanced course of 3.4 km with 10 controls took participants into some technical terrain and also some thicker forest.

Pia Blake - 56:50
Sara Nielsen - 68:25
Carl Turcotte - 83:59

The competition was hot on the 4.8 km long Expert course. Local orienteers just edged out Czech mapper Radim Ondracek, who is revising some of the Yukon Orienteering Association’s maps this summer. Radim should be given a break though, as he ran the Yukon River Trail Marathon just three days ago.

Benoit Turcotte - 47:51
Leif Blake - 48:34
Forest Pearson - 49:39
Radim Ondracek - 49:44
Darren Holcombe - 64:51
Afan Jones - 64:53
Jeremy Johnson - 68:21

The next regular Wednesday night meet takes place on August 23rd, using the Copper Ridge map.
