WOHL Wrap: EDI upsets first-place Firth; Capri unbeaten in six

Yukon Inn scored four times in the first period and then hung on to defeat CapriCMW 6-3 in Whitehorse Oldtimers hockey action Monday night at ATCO arena.

Monday

Yukon Inn scored four times in the first period and then hung on to defeat CapriCMW 6-3 in Whitehorse Oldtimers hockey action Monday night at ATCO arena. The Kevins led the goalscoring parade in victory, as Topping and Johnstone each popped a pair. Russ McDiarmid and Steve Arell added one apiece. For Capri, it was Ed van Randen with a deuce and Greg Lane with the other.

In the other game Monday on the NWTel ice, Chris Carli's second goal of the game proved to be the game winner as Firth stopped Kilrich 5-3. Shawn Kinsella chipped in two goals for Firth, and Nate Clark finished the scoring. Kilrich got two goals from Mike Sage and a solo effort from Johnny Sembsmoen.

Sunday

Kevin Johnstone scored early and often to lead Yukon Inn past Medicine Chest 7-4 in Whitehorse Oldtimers hockey action Sunday at Takhini Arena. Johnstone conserved his energy on a shorthanded squad by scoring four in total, while Rob Green changed gears and added two and Kevin Topping chipped in one.

For Medicine Chest, the ageless Dave Ecker potted a pair, and singles came from Martin Lawrie and Lester Balsillie.

EDI 6, Kilrich 6

Matt was King for EDI, scoring with 1:06 left on the clock to earn EDI the tie. King's goal capped a comeback from a 6-3 deficit. Myles Dolphin led the EDI offence with two goals, and one apiece came from Brian Currie, Nathan Bingham and Ian Boyce.

For Kilrich, Dan Johnson netted two, and solo efforts came from Scott Palfreyman, Greg Charlie, Stu MacMillan and Johnny Sembsmoen.

Firth 6, Air North 5

The Rangers' powerplay was on fire, scoring four times, Extra-man goals were tallied by Nate Clark with two, Duane Purych (!?) and Shawn Kinsella. Other Firth marksmen were Ben Kielb and B.C. import Peter Kirby. The Heffner line compiled 10 points in defeat, with dad Bernie netting two goals, and sons Ty and Dustin one each. Dave Bakica got the other.

Tim Hortons 5, CapriCMW 3

Willy McKenna was hot, scoring on three breakaways to lift Timmy's to triumph. Bernie Adilman added the winner with only 3:41 on the clock, and Mike Gau sealed the deal with an empty-netter. Dave Wipf, Ed van Randen and Greg Lane replied for Capri.

Thursday

Pete Johnston roofed the winner midway through the second period as EDI staved off a furious final assault to upset the Firth Rangers 4-3 in Whitehorse Oldtimers hockey action at Takhini Arena Thursday night. Matt King, dangling all night, added a laser shot for the winning tally as eighth-place EDI surprised first-place Firth. Dave White (!) and George Maratos also tallied in victory. Shawn Kinsella netted two (one a shorty), and Chris Carli added the other for Firth.

Air North 5, Kilrich 4

Garrett Kuptana landed a pair of goals to steer the air crew. Gregor Gabb added a single, as did Dustin Heffner, and Dustin's dad Bernie. For Kilrich, Scott Palfreyman, Sean MacLeish, Carl Cibart and Darryl Cann stapled goals to the back of the net.

Wednesday

Capri 9, Medicine Chest 0

Alfred Feldman netted the hat trick to help Capri stretch their unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2). Floyd McCormick earned the shutout. Arlo O'Riordan added two goals and four helpers, and Greg Lane also chipped in a pair of goals. Ben Campbell and Dave Wipf rounded out the scoring.

Yukon Inn 5, Tim Hortons 4

Nine different goalscorers tickled the twine in this tight tilt. For the winners it was Jeff Jensen, Laurie Malo, Kevin Topping, Blaine Demchuk and Russ McDiarmid. In defeat for Tims, it was Chris Nash, Mike Gau, Ryan Martin and Darnell Kiriak, the latter with his first marker of the season.

Firth continues to lead the standings with 42 points (21-6). Tim Hortons (18-8-1) and the Yukon Inn (17-7-3) are tied for second with 37 points. All three teams have played 27 games.

Firth's Nate Clark, equal parts playmaker and goalscorer, continues to lead the scoring spree with 68 points (34 goals, 34 assists) in only 21 games. Willy Mckenna of Tims is second with 53 points (24 goals, 29 assists), also in a paltry 21 games. Dustin Heffner of Air North has flown into third place with 49 points (22 goals, 27 assists) in 26 games.

In the goalies' stats, Glen Traverse leads regular team goalies with a 2.96 Goals Against Average, while Jim Antonissen steadfastly maintains his hold on second with a 3.19 GAA. Paul Husband of TA Firth rounds out the top- three with a 3.95 GAA.

Traverse leads in goalie wins with 18, followed by Antonissen with 17 and Husband with 15 victories.
